ELKLAND TOWNSHIP — An 82-year-old Cass City woman passed away at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw on Sunday after a single-vehicle accident in Tuscola County.
According to officials from the Michigan State Police post in Caro, Ina Bissett was southbound on Schwegler Road near M-81 around 10:30 a.m.
Firefighters from Cass City and Elkland fire departments were able to remove Bissett after the driver’s side door was pinned against a tree.

According to Undersheriff James E. Jashinske, of the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Department, Gregory Scott Myers was the passenger in a vehicle driven by Laura Ann Raab, 44, of Gagetown, when the accident occurred at 10:15 p.m.
Both Raab and Myers were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be removed using the Elkland Township Fire Department’s Jaws of Life.
The Elmwood and Elkland township fire departments, MMR Ambulance Service and FlightCare helicopter assisted at the scene.

Several years ago, Jack took what was nothing more than a large sheet of paper with little squares marked on it by hand, and turned it into the very precise and accurate map of the Elkland Township Cemetery with all 2073 numbered cemetery lots.
It thrived under his leadership and would be one of only two banks in the State of Michigan that remained solvent during the “Great Depression.” (The story told is that at the time of the “run” on banks he ordered silver dollars, and when depositors wanted their money, it was offered in silver dollars.
James Purdy, along with the other Michigan bankers involved are, to this day, recognized as the originators of the F.D.I.C. concept.

Her parents (my father's line) were pioneer settlers in Eramosa Township, near Guelph, Ontario.
The Sweeney line is tangential to my own personal quest, which is tracing the descendents of Susanna's brothers, John and Jane (Loree) Dew, and Martin and Harriet (Bennett) Dew, who settled in Greenleaf Township and Elkland Township, respectively, at some point shortly after Susanna and Terrence.
One of the "Hallelujah" moments of my search was to get hold of a Township map of MI and to find that Sheridan, Greenleaf, and Elkland Townships are contiguous!!
