ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Former Elko County district judge and district attorney Tom Stringfield was found dead Tuesday in Lamoille Canyon, the victim of an apparent suicide.
Elko County Sheriff Neil Harris said he was contacted by a worker in Stringfield's law office after Stringfield, who's now in private practice, failed to show for a court date.
He was appointed Elko County district attorney in 1978 by the county commission.

ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Repairing a controversial road at the center of a dispute over threatened bull trout in Elko County's Jarbidge River will cost anywhere from $1 million to $11 million, the Forest Service says.
County officials said it's still possible federal grants could be secured to help with the effort.
He said the main reason the county decided originally to repair the road was to provide protection for the little town of Jarbidge from forest fires.

RENO -- Elko County wants a federal judge to make public the confidential settlement county activists and government negotiators are considering in a Forest Service dispute over a road and a threatened fish.
Elko County District Attorney Gary Woodbury said the County Commission instructed him to make the request of U.S. Magistrate Robert McQuaid today during a private teleconference on the status of the proposed deal.
Another part of the deal apparently involves the county's agreement to help reimburse the Forest Service for efforts to protect the threatened bull trout, the Elko Daily Free Press reported Thursday.

They are trying to determine whether there is enough common ground to continue talks or whether federal prosecutors will resume a civil lawsuit in the battle over jurisdiction of the South Canyon Road and protection of the threatened bull trout in the Jarbidge River.
The Forest Service maintains that while the county has free access to the road, the government owns it.
