Morse died of respiratory failure in Bullhead City, Arizona.
It is sometimes erroneously reported that Morse recorded with Bill Haley and His Comets in the 1950s.

The Texas-born Morse, who was born in 1924 and got her start in show business at age 9 by singing in her parents' ragtime band, earned a spot in Tommy Dorsey's band at 13 -- until the school board found out and Dorsey sent her home.
Morse went on to make 10 gold records, including ``House of Blue Lights'' in 1946, which is considered one of the most important records in the evolution of rock 'n' roll.

Here in Australia we certainly knew Ella Mae from her radio hit "Blacksmith Blues" but this CD is a lovely showcase of her wider talents.
She was the swingingest singer around back in my schoolboy days, and if she were still alive today (she died in 1999) she would be declared a national treasure.
By the way, to date myself, in 1952 I was in the 6th grade and one of the top hits in LA was "Blacksmith Blues" by Ella Mae Morse.
