, an urban district in the Elland parliamentary division of Yorkshire, England, on the Calder, 21/2 m.
Elland Hall, though almost rebuilt, retains the recollection of a remarkable family feud between the Ellands and the Beaumonts of Crosland Hall, the site of which may be traced in the vicinity.
A nephew of Sir John Elland, in 1342, met death at the hands of a relative of the Beaumonts upon whom Sir John took vengeance, as also upon the heads of the allied houses of Lockwood and Quarmby.

Naomi and I chose to chance our arm and take an unplanned walk from where we live, in the centre of Elland, up to Elland Park Woods to admire the views from the top of the hill that we can see from our back doorstep.
We dropped down to Elland Bridge and followed the canal (Calder and Hebble Navigation) as far as the Collier's Arms.
There are various footpaths through the woods and we chose the ones across the top of the woods which with hindsight was not the best choice as we ended up cutting down through knee high vegetation to rejoin the road.

I have now followed Joseph and Benjamin Kaye the two youngest sons of Benjamin Kaye and Grace Calverley of ELLand to their homes in Nova Scotia and met many of their descendents on a recent visit.
Joseph built Elland Hall in Halifax Nova Scotia in 1856 and became an Alderman of that City and his brother Benjamin farmed 100 acres at Acacia Grove the home he bought from Charles Ramage Prescott in 1861 and which his widow Elizabeth left to her heirs in 1994.
We are, however, still looking for John Kaye, Benjamin Kaye's (b 1785)father who was probably born in and around Elland or the Parish of Longwood, Huddersfield.
