In 815 Ecgbert ravaged the whole of the territories of the West Welsh, which probably at this time did not include much more than Cornwall.
The next important occurrence in the reign was the defeat of Beornwulf of Mercia at a place called Ellandun in 825.
After this victory Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Essex submitted to Wessex; while the East Anglians, who slew Beornwulf shortly afterwards, acknowledged Ecgbert as overlord.

Beornwulf of Mercia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A man named Beornwulf is mentioned as having witnessed a charter of King Coenwulf in 812 and another of King Ceolwulf in 823, but his position on each of these charters suggests he was not of an exceptionally high rank.
In 825, he was badly defeated by the King of Wessex, Egbert, in battle at Ellandun, and Egbert subsequently captured Kent and drove out its pro-Mercian king, Baldred.
In the wake of these events, Mercia's dominance of southern England rapidly unravelled.

In 892, when all southern England was united under Alfred the Great, Kent was on the brink of disaster.

By this battle the power of Mercia was broken, and Essex and Kent, formerly Mercian provinces, became incorporated with Wessex.
For four years after the great battle of Ellandun, Mercia remained the seat of discontent and strife, and E, in 827, taking advantage of his opportunity, led thither an invading force, and reduced the country to a state of vassalage.
Turning next his arms against Northumbria, he compelled that sovereignty also to acknowledge his supremacy (827-828).
