  Ellef Ringnes Island
Most of the island consists of great thicknesses of sedimentary rock, except for an occurrence of the arctic coastal plain in the northwest corner.
The island's topography reflects these structural and lithological controls, and is characterized by broad lowlands and dissected uplands.
Despite generally arid conditions the surface becomes saturated in summer, owing to an active layer derived from water-retentive shale, underlain by impermeable PERMAFROST.

In April and May of 1994, Larry Newitt, of the Geological Survey of Canada, and Charles Barton, of the Australian Geological Survey Organisation, conducted a survey to determine the average position of the North Magnetic Pole at that time.
They determined that the average position of the North Magnetic Pole in 1994 was located on the Noice Peninsula, southwest Ellef Ringnes Island, at 78.3° N, 104.0° W. The pole passed away from the island that year and now lies some 250 miles (400 km) to the NNW [1].

Ice-flow indicators and granite dispersal along eastern Amund Ringnes Island record the inundation of Massy Sound by northwestward flowing trunk ice from Innuitian divides spanning the alpine and lowland sectors of the Queen Elizabeth Islands.
The interior of Amund Ringnes Island was overridden by granite-free Innuitian ice flowing north from a lowland divide spanning the central Queen Elizabeth Islands.
The continuity of the isobases across Amund and Ellef Ringnes islands is consistent with the glacial geologic evidence that suggests Massey and Hassel sounds were occupied by grounded ice during the last glaciation.

ABSTRACT: Postglacial emergence of Amund and Ellef Ringnes islands, Nunavut: implications for the northwest sector of the Innuitian Ice Sheet.
These suggest the Ringnes Islands occupied the northwest radius of the Innuitian uplift, which is congruent with glacial geological evidence suggesting parts of the Ringnes Islands were covered by the Late Wisconsinan Innuitian Ice Sheet.
The absence of an isobase embayment across the Ringnes Islands suggests a relatively uniform ice load across both islands and Hassel and Massey sounds.

Thermal maturation in the Ellef Ringnes Island and surrounding area, Sverdrup Basin
Determining thermal maturity studies in the Ellef Ringnes Island area was complicated by numerous factors, such as the presence of cavings, bitumen staining, and igneous intrusions.
Other features observed include overpressuring caused by hydrocarbon generation in the Schei Point source rocks as well as in the Jameson and Ringnes Shales, and a kinky Ro profile caused by the presence of low-permeability gas-bearing reservoirs in the Heiberg sandstones in Jackson Bay G-16A.
