Absalom, Absalom! - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The story is told entirely in flashbacks narrated mostly by Quentin Compson and by Rosa Coldfield, with events told in non-chronological order and often retold by different people with differing details, resulting in a peeling-back-the-onion way of revealing the true story of the Sutpens to the reader.
All he needs to complete his plans is a wife to bear him a few children (particularly a son to be his heir), so he ingratiates himself with a local merchant and marries the man’s daughter, Ellen Coldfield.
Ellen bears Sutpen two children, a son named Henry and a daughter named Judith, both of whom are destined for tragedy.

 SparkNotes: Absalom, Absalom!: Chapter 1
Quentin goes to see Rosa Coldfield; they sit in the musty room she calls the "office," with the shutters shut so tightly that only thin slits of light shine into the room, and he listens to her story.
Thirsting for respectability, Sutpen married Ellen Coldfield, the older sister of Miss Rosa, who was yet to be born), and the daughter of a local Methodist merchant.
One night Ellen discovered her husband participating in a fight with a negro before a bloodthirsty crowd, with the children watching--Henry crying and upset, Judith (who had snuck there to watch with a little negro girl) in rapt attention.

Ellen, the daughter of a Methodist merchant, was twenty-two years older than Rosa.
One night Ellen discovered her husband participating in a fight with a fl slave, with the children watching.
She also mentions that Thomas Sutpen and his son Henry both fought in the War, and she repeats over and over again Ellen's deathbed wish: that Rosa, then a young girl, would "protect" Judith, who was four years older than Rosa.

Her sister Ellen has married Thomas Sutpen and that union has produced two children--Henry and Judith (Rosa's senior nephew and niece by six and four years respectively).
Edenfield recalls the Coldfield family's tendency to disparage Miss Rosa as she struggles to assimilate herself into the family unit.
Coldfield's emotional distance, how the young Rosa's inferiority complex senses blame for her mother's mid-life death during childbirth, how Ellen's marriage to Sutpen further compromises the already strained sisterhood, her aunt's (father's sister's) elopement, Henry's killing of Charles (whom Rosa had adolescently fancied as a prospective husband).

But soon it became apparent that Ellen was disengaged from her father and her sister, opting instead to focus on the wealth and privilege that Sutpen's plantation had brought her.
Coldfield, mysterious even to his daughters, is a decent, ineffectual man without the mental strength or emotional resources to confront the harsh realities of the world.
Meanwhile, the South is in ruins, and Judith, Clytie and Ellen (until she dies in 1863) are scrambling (along with the rest of the town and the rest of the South) to eat.

Note that we are still awaiting the result of Quentin’s return to Rosa Coldfield’s house that evening to accompany her to the old Sutpen place.
Consider the importance to Thomas Sutpen of what might have happened: If he permitted the marriage of his half-son Bon to his daughter Judith (unthinkable to him because Bon is part Negro, even aside from the incest that would result), the racial mixture of their offspring would be totally unacceptable in Sutpen’s grand design.

Rosa Coldfield is “strong with forty-three years of hate,” against a world that has wronged her (the world of the South) with its male insistence that “if you haven’t got honor and pride, then nothing matters” (Faulkner 279).
Unlike Rosa, Ellen does bloom and this process is described as her butterfly period.
Ellen’s garden can be seen as the southern soil and its fruits, the South and its women.
