Ellen, who was of course an Oscar nominee, had really only played small bit parts in motion pictures for twenty years, before she became noticed in a major way on television's 'The Waltons'.

I know that Ellen Corby who played her had actually one but the show's cohesion was GONE with the subtraction of the tart,fiesty character from the everyday life of the family!
For those that saw it from day one we knew it was a major accomplishment for Ellen Corby to try to come back (the stroke she had almost completely disabled her speech) and it was painful to see her once feisty character struggle along with the actress.
Mary Ellen told the family she was pregnant in 1938 (and not Winter 1938, but seemingly earlier in the year), but she doesn't give birth until Fall 1939.
