Isthmus | The Daily Page - Ellen Foley's State Journal
Foley feared her paper's readers — starved for time and wanting relevant and engaging writing — wouldn't be pulled into the piece.
Foley, who was once a registered Republican and now considers herself "socially liberal and fiscally conservative," laughs at the suggestion that the paper's voice has gone from conservative to moderate.
Foley's willingness to experiment and her persistence in adapting to changing demands are important assets that will help the State Journal stay at the forefront of what readers want, whether or not it's what they need.

So Ellen Foley is a ForgottenDiva, but for so much more than "Paradise by the Dashboard Light".
Not just a versatile back-up singer, Foley had a successful solo career in the late '70s and early '80s, riding the first wave of post-punk women in rock (a wave that spawned many a diva!).
Her albums "NIGHTOUT" and "Another Breath" were certified hits, and her experimental new-wave/cabaret disc "Spirit of St. Louis" (a collaboration with then-lover and member of the Clash Mick Jones) is a moody, atmospheric classic.

Ellen Foley : Spirit of St. Louis - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The standout is "Torchlight," a duet with Foley on which Jones drops some characteristically glistening guitar.
(The song originally appeared on Dogg's 1976's self-released Outlaw Number One album.) Foley is less convincing on a stiff remake of "My Legionnaire," but fares better on her own propulsive original, "Phases of Travel." The sound is lush and dreamy, although a little more consistent material and less artsiness would have gone a long way.
Clash fans impatient for the old three-chord thunder couldn't stifle their yawns, so the album bombed -- but the rewards are there, if you care to listen.
