Ellen (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ellen (originally titled These Friends of Mine for the first season) was a U.S. television sitcom which ran on the ABC network from March of 1994 to July of 1998.
However, after Ellen came out, the show's ratings began to decline, which many attribute to the show becoming too much of a focus on the gay issues and not enough the comedy, or, perhaps more accurately, the perceived beating into the ground of the gay joke.
Ellen Morgan is the main character of the sitcom.

DVD Verdict Review - Ellen: The Complete First Season
Ellen and Adam pretend to be married for her high-school reunion, but the plan backfires when she meets an interesting man.
And, of course, watching Ellen try to install her own water cooler jug, spilling it all over the kitchen before putting it in place, and then dispensing the one remaining drop into a glass and drinking it, shows a hint of her talent for physical comedy, when given the opportunity.
Ellen is found guilty of squandering the efforts of a talented comedian, but because it then went on to change the face (and the sexuality) of TV for the better, it is hereby pardoned of this and all other crimes.

Like Seinfeld the thrust of Ellen was the interplay between the star and her offbeat friends.
Ellen proved highly popular and quickly settled down as one of a number of smart, urban-singles sitcoms (Seinfeld, Friends, Dream On and the like), providing plenty of laughs.
Amid such brouhaha, Ellen DeGeneres 'came out' in real life and then the fictional Ellen Morgan did likewise in an hour-length episode of the sitcom, screened in the USA on 30 April 1997, which topped the ratings with an audience of 45 million Americans, and attracted huge coverage in the media.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: School Daze
Cast: Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, Tisha Campbell, Kyme, Joe Seneca, Art Evans, Ellen Holly, Spike Lee and Ossie Davis
At the heart of the film's tension are the simmering social divisions between the school's "Wannabes" and "Jigaboos," or, in other words, the light-skinned, integration-aspiring, economically well-off students versus the dark-skinned, militant, socially and politically conscious students.
School Daze isn't going to convert anyone who considers Lee a filmmaker whose ambitions exceed his grasp, but for those who savor their arguments loose and full of tangents, it is as rich in rewards as other second-gear Lee films (Summer of Sam, Crooklyn).
