  Key, Ellen Criticism and Essays
Key maintained a nearly mystical view of maternity, and her feminist theories elevated motherhood—whether it involved actual childbearing or "mothering" society's ills by agitating for peace—to a place of central importance in the psychological and social realization of women.
Born on December 11, 1849 in Vastervik, Sweden, Key was the daughter of a politician and estate-owner.
Key was disappointed by Germany's militarism in World War I and by the refusal of French and German feminist organizations to send delegates to The Hague, Holland, to support a peace movement founded by women.

Key promoted a "new school" that would really prepare children for life, by adapting to the children's own world and creating a learning experience through their own activity.
In Key's view, the school ought not to do what parents could easily do themselves: she argued that in some respects, home education might be preferred to school education.
Key's pedagogical optimism and her social criticism could not only shock conservative readers, but (more important) she managed to express exactly what progressive educators at that time loved to hear: that they would be capable to change the world through education.
