Ellen was the daughter of William Lewis Herndon, a famous naval officer, and Frances Elizabeth Hansbrough-Herndon.
Ellen ("Nell") was born and raised in central Virginia.
Ellen was introduced to Chester Alan Arthur in New York City en route to visit her widowed mother, and after a brief courtship, they were married in 1859 on her father's birthdate.

Arthur was a member of the Republican Party and worked as a lawyer before becoming the 20th vice president under James Garfield.
Arthur was born in the town of Fairfield in Franklin County, Vermont, on October 5, 1829, although he sometimes claimed to be born in 1830 (even his grave inscription says the latter).
Chester was buried next to Ellen in the Arthur family plot in the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, New York, in a large sarcophagus on a large corner plot that contains the graves of many of his family members and ancestors.
