Bill Clinton's former Chief of Staff John Podesta will serve as Marlboro College's commencement speaker this year at the first ceremony presided over by his longtime friend and former colleague, Ellen McCulloch-Lovell.
At the private graduation ceremony on May 16, McCulloch-Lovell will bestow on Podesta an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Marlboro College.

Marlboro College named Ellen McCulloch-Lovell, a leader in the arts, education and public policy in Washington D.C. and Vermont, to be its eighth president.
A 1969 graduate of Bennington College, McCulloch-Lovell served as executive director of the Vermont Council on the Arts from 1975 to 1983, during which time she co-created the Governors Institutes, a program that gives high school students the opportunity to work with artists, scientists and international experts in summer institutes.

A few years ago, Ellen McCulloch-Lovell spent hours next to a copy machine with her mother, patiently duplicating more than a thousand letters that her father wrote during his military service in World War II.
Before Congress created the Veterans' History Project in late 2000, there had been no nationally organized, systematic method of preserving veteran stories, according to McCulloch-Lovell.
A part of the Library of Congress' American Folklife Center, the project encourages individuals and its 630 partner organizations to collect and donate photographs, diaries, letters, and other memorabilia from American servicemen and women, as well as tape-recorded, filmed, and videotaped interviews of veterans discussing their wartime experiences.

This year, Marlboro's 57th commencement features 55 graduates, fewer presidents and two old friends from Washington, D.C. Commencement speaker John Podesta and Marlboro President Ellen McCulloch-Lovell worked together on the staff of U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and in the Clinton Administration.
Podesta, who served as Clinton's chief of staff, recently founded the Center for American Progress, one of the country's few liberal think-tanks.
Marlboro's first commencement, in 1948, boasted Robert Frost as its speaker, presidents from a dozen colleges in attendance and Hugh Mulligan as its one graduate.
