Ellens dritter Gesang - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ellens dritter Gesang (D839, Op 52 no 6, 1825), Ellen's third song in English, composed by Franz Schubert in 1825, is one of Schubert's most popular works for over a century after the composer's death, although some misconceptions exist around it.
In Scott's poem the character Ellen Douglas, the "Lady" of "the Lake" (Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands) has gone with her father to hide in the "Goblin's cave" nearby to avoid drawing the vengeance of the King on their host, the Clan-Alpine chieftain Roderick Dhu.
The opening words of Ellen's song, "Ave Maria" (Latin, "Hail Mary"), are the same as the canonical Roman Catholic prayer Hail Mary; this may have led to idea of using the melody as a setting for the Latin prayer itself.

 Wikipedia: Franz Schubert
The compositions of 1820 are remarkable, and show a marked advance in development and maturity of style.
The unfinished oratorio "Lazarus" (D.689) was begun in February; later followed, amid a number of smaller works, the 23rd Psalm (D.706), the Gesang der Geister (D.705/714), the Quartettsatz in C minor (D.703) and the great "Wanderer Fantasy" for piano (D.760).
This cyclus contains his famous and beloved "Ave Maria" (original title Ellens dritter Gesang, D.839), which was originally set to Adam Storck's German translation of Scott's original poem, not to the Latin text of the Ave Maria prayer that is commonly sung today.

This is a strange mixture of items from Bach to twentieth-century Romanian, but ignore the generic titling and sit back to share with Angela Gheorghiu songs which are 'for her a musical affirmation of faith'.
Some of the items, such as Wiegenlied and Auf Flugeln des Gesanges should be accompanied by the piano and do not benefit from the orchestral arrangements, that to the Brahms song being mushy and nebulous.
Oratorios are represented by 'Quia respexit' from the Bach Magnificat, which makes me eager to hear Gheorghiu sing the soprano lead in the Mozart as well as the Verdi Requiem she has already recorded, and the 'Pie Jesu' from Faure Requiem.

I will be singing in a friend’s (or frolleague’s) wedding in a few weeks, and she wants me to sing what is popularly known as Ave Maria, since those are the first two words.
However, the actual song title is Ellens Dritter Gesang (Ellen’s Third Song), as it was written by Schubert for a particular piece in which, apparently, Ellen sings two other songs before that one.
And it's still several weeks until the friend's wedding for which I will be singing Ellen's Gesang in front of Lord knows how many people, so it should be gone by then.
