Large portions (80,000 km²) of Ellesmere Island are covered with glaciers and ice, with Manson Icefield and Sydkap in the south; Prince of Wales Icefield and Agassiz Ice Cap along the central-east side of the island, along with substantial ice cover in Northern Ellesmere Island.

 COMMISSION REPORT MACRO
The TTC's mandate is to move people within the City of Toronto, and customers' expectations of the TTC are continually changing, as their travel needs evolve.
Subsequent to the October 31, 2001 Commission meeting, TTC and Mississauga Transit staff negotiated an arrangement for Mississauga Transit to contract with the TTC to operate the extension of the 32 Eglinton West route to the Airport Corporate Centre.
No new customers would be attracted to the TTC by the streetcar extension, as no new areas would be served, and all of the stops on the new route are already served by the frequent 7 Bathurst bus route.

Toronto Transit Commission - The Fall Edition -
While the TTC continued to plan and build its streetcar-based Scarborough LRT line (it was planned that out of the initial order of 196 CLRVs, 22 would be used on the Scarborough line, either individually, or coupled together into MU trains), the Province went it alone in designing the ICTS vehicle.
If the TTC had gone this route, trains to Keele at St. George and Woodbine at Bay would be on the same level, and passengers wouldn’t have to wait between levels in order to be sure to catch the first train to their destination.
This situation did not remain, however, as declining ridership and the cost of serving the low-density suburbs pushed the TTC into deficit, but even as the City was providing subsidy for the construction of the University subway, there was no pressure to move the Bloor line back onto Queen.

The Shropshire Union Canal, developed to transport iron-ore from the Furness peninsula to the West Midlands, and china clay to the Potteries, reached Ellesmere Port in 1795.

TTC buses are relatively old, but are kept pretty clean for their age.
The TTC is based on the backbone of three subway lines with streetcar & bus routes that connect to it.

Besides, with 60 per cent of TTC users transferring from one route to the next, only the route where the ticket is initially deposited would get credit for the fare, even though the longer portion of the trip may occur after the transfer, Rodo says.
Smart Cards: This is the way of the future, and it would allow the TTC to charge fares by distance, by time of day, by mode of transportation and avoid the political upheaval that would surround the reintroduction of zone fares.
When the TTC embarked on the planning exercise on what to do with the 43,000 daily riders that take the SRT now, politicians from Scarborough were quick to begin promoting the high-end option of replacing the line with a regular subway tunnel.

While Commissioners considered whether to rebuild the TTC’s streetcar fleet or replace it with advanced LRT technology, a similar question has to be asked of the Scarborough RT.
Then there is the sharp turn between Ellesmere and Midland, and the question of getting to the Scarborough Town Centre using an elevated track designed for smaller, lighter equipment.
Passengers currently using Ellesmere and Midland would be inconvenienced, but this would be more than made up for by the millions of passengers who would have a much shorter commute.

Scarborough RT (TTC) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Internally, the TTC uses the name ‘rapid transit’ to refer to all four lines, which is often confusing to the general public.
The TTC had proposed to extend the Bloor-Danforth line using streetcars operating in a private right-of-way, but the ICTS system was used instead because the Province of Ontario agreed to pay a large portion of the costs.
Only a year after it opened, the TTC had to renovate its south-western terminus at Kennedy station, because the looped turnaround track, originally designed for streetcars under the earlier plan and not needed for the bi-directional ICTS trains, was causing derailments; it was replaced with a single terminal track.

Because new cars would be low floor, the platforms have to be lowered or the tracks raised.  In the TTC scheme this poses problems at stations like Midland where the platform is an integral part of the bridge structure and cannot be demolished.
If the TTC runs true to form, they will launch an Environmental Assessment that is strongly skewed to a subway option and will concoct some reason why looking at the larger network implications is not possible.  They may prove me wrong, but I won’t be surprised if everything but subways falls off of the table.
Steve:  Destroyed?  The TTC’s 1966 plan shows a network of lines to be operated with modern streetcars.  Things started to come unglued with the move to high-cost technologies like the RT and subways where we only get to build small segments rather than a network.

Ellesmere (TTC) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The TTC is hoping of a replacement of the SRT for light rail transit, with an extension to Sheppard East in Malvern.
Because of the low cost of LRT, the Bloor-Danforth subway extension, which would not have passed Ellesmere, from Kennedy to Sheppard East got turned down.
This extension will be considered later, though, as the TTC has bigger priorites to deal with: The potential Sheppard line extension from Don Mills to Scarborough Centre and the Spadina line extension from Downsview to Steeles West, and eventually, Vaughan Corporate Centre.

I think subway would be the best answer, even if it were to only have 2 station stops and just leave the RT as it is currently, allowing for people living at Midland, Ellesmere, etc to have a faster connection to Kennedy/anywhere else.
