All indications are that Ellie Greenwich certainly could have established herself as a performer, as well as a songwriter.
But Greenwich, unlike her Brill Building peer Carole King, never reached her full potential as a recording artist, although she did make some interesting discs, both as a solo singer and a member of the Raindrops.
As shown on the Raindrops singles and rare solo 45s, her vocals were good, as good, in fact, as those of most of the acts for whom she wrote.

During one of the many demo sessions in which she was involved, Greenwich met and "discovered" Neil Diamond and went on to co-produce such early Diamond hits as "Cherry Cherry" and "Kentucky Woman," doing background vocals as well.
During the latter part of the 60's, Greenwich found continued success in collaborations with Bob Crewe, in writing for The Hardy Boys TV series, and in singing on popular commercials for Cheerios, Clairol and Ford Mustang, as well as on her Clio-nominated "Oo La La Sasson" jeans spot.

Then there are three good songs from her 1967 album Ellie Greenwich Composes, Produces & Sings, showing her still capable of delivering tuneful New York pop-rock, even if it was on the verge of becoming outdated.

The 56-track, two-CD set includes almost anything you're likely to find that was recorded by Greenwich as a solo artist, although it omits most of her Raindrops recordings (which have been reissued separately, and legitimately).
Disc two is almost totally devoted to the 1968 and 1973 albums, which have some good moments but are overall disappointing, and too heavy on remakes and covers.
After all this, by the way, a rarity (1962's "Big Honky Baby") that was ascribed to Greenwich on Ellie Greenwich is not included on this set.

Ellie Greenwich also had her obligatory singer/songwriter moment with 1973's Let It Be Written, Let It Be Sung, although it was a role she was reluctant to accept.
Ellie was always vehemently aligned with pop—from her earliest compositions for the Ronettes, the Dixie Cups, the Shangri Las, and her own group the Raindrops to the late '70s when she joined Blondie on "Dreaming" and "Atomic," and sang backing vocals on Cyndi Lauper's chick cheer She's So Unusual.
On the phone from her New York abode, Ellie speaks in exclamation points when pulling memories from her pop past.
