Luna Lovegood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A common speculation is that the largeness of her eyes is not merely a comedic exaggeration, but as in many classical artworks, symbolises a keen sense of awareness, insight, or profound spirituality.
Obviously a portmanteau of "love" and "good", both of which have very positive connotations (as in "a fight between good and evil, love and hate") This could refer to her kind character, or be simply an idiosyncrasy of the author.
Her last name could also be a reference to Elliot Lovegood Grant Watson, who wrote numerous books attacking the insufficiencies of Darwinism after he was raised by a mother who adored Darwin.

Watson, Elliot Lovegood Grant (1885 - 1970) Biographical Entry - Australian Dictionary of Biography Online   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
WATSON, ELLIOT LOVEGOOD GRANT (1885-1970), biologist, writer and mystic, was born on 14 June 1885 at Staines, Middlesex, England, elder son of Reginald Grant Watson, gentleman, and his wife Lucy, née Fuller.
Distinguished by a precise as well as a poetic evocation of the landscape and by an empathy with the Aborigines, Watson's Australian novels are also important for their use of the desert as a metaphor of the Unconscious and, metaphysically, as an image of the Void as the womb of all possible manifestations.
Watson faced the desert with awe, not fear, and had a real affinity with the bush.

 Luna Lovegood
She is called "Loony Lovegood" behind her back, although she is aware of this and doesn't seem to mind.
It is never stated that this is Luna's family, but J. Rowling rarely throws away connections, and it can be presumed that even if the people living near the Burrow are not Luna's family, they are probably related in some way.
Luna standing for the moon also implies that she is light of heart and good of heart, like the moon goddess Diana.

And while we're in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" mode, what about the girl who played Hugh Grant's friend Scarlett (don't think I ever knew her name) for Tonx.
I think Figg is a LOT older than Dench....I see her more as a Jean Heywood (Grandma from Billy Elliot) or a Liz Smith (of Vicar of Dibley or Royle Family fame).
I'm not sure what part she's suitable for, but it would be nicely confusing to have her playing alongside Emma Watson.
