Scheiner and Cherney weren't household names to us, but we were aware of the results of their work, which include efforts by Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Beck, The Flaming Lips, The Eagles, REM, Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Elton John, Van Morrison, Jimmy Buffett, and others.
When we discovered that Scheiner and Cherney would be using an AMD dual-Opteron-based DAW64 workstation to record the marathon concert (the first time the technology was used for a live concert), we were convinced Texas was where we needed to be.
Early on Scheiner worked on a Mac, but he says he spent "more time rebooting" than working and was "ready to sell it in five days." After transitioning through various systems, he moved to the DAW64 running Pinnacle Steinberg Nuendo software after AMD's Charlie Boswell introduced him to the system.

 YOU ARE SURROUNDED
Elliot has gone on record saying that music takes on "an entirely new life" in surround, and although he concedes that there are still a few matters to iron out, such as a standardised sampling rate for surround mixes, he also plays down these remaining issues.
Elliot Scheiner also has little to do with the final stage of DVD production, nor with whether AC3 or DTS compression is used to fit his mixes onto DVD-Video discs with visual material, as he is satisfied that either method is acceptable (see last month's instalment for more on why this is necessary).
Elliot started mixing for surround with several live projects, and often attempted to recreate a live soundstage on these, placing the principal musicians across the Left, Centre and Right channels, and putting supporting musicians in the Surround channels to give the listener a stage-based perspective.
