 * Dusted Reviews - Elliott Smith *
A basement on the hill is in a way the perfect metaphor for Elliott Smith's final album: it's the idea of being low in a high place, of the dark cloud looming within its anecdotal silver lining.
To extend this interpretation to the rest of Smith's work would be an oversimplification, if only because his prior recordings more often chronicle being low in low places, but it certainly fits these fifteen songs which collectively bear the inescapable specter of his suicide late last year.
Smith's muse was always infirmity and addiction — the gloomy depressions of drugs in the early days and love later on — but it rarely pointed to anything more terminal than a sort of spiteful, narcotized inertia.

 Elliott Smith: From A Basement On The Hill (2004): Reviews
This is an album about the seductions of oblivion, and a few of the more densely arranged songs mimic the characters in the lyrics, stumbling around without quite connecting.
Elliott had grand ideas for this album, and many of them were left out by those who compiled these tracks to make this album.
This album gets somewhat of a bum rap because we all feel cheated, but if we can look beyond that and just look at the album for what it is, we can truly appreciate the beauty.

Perhaps it's not "the next White Album," which is what McConnell claims it could have been, but it has a similarly freewheeling spirit, bouncing from sweet pop to fingerpicked acoustic guitars to fuzzy neo-psychedelic washes of sound.
It may or may not be exactly what Elliott Smith intended these recording sessions to be, but as it stands, From a Basement on the Hill is a fond farewell to a singer/songwriter who many indie rockers of the '90s considered a friend.

As amazing as "Roman Candle," "Elliott Smith," and "Either/or" are--and indeed, they are my favorite Elliott Smith albums--those albums require the listener to truly immerse himself in the music; special attention needs to be paid to all the quiet subtleties, or else much of the beauty and uniqueness can be lost.
smith himself, however, clearly did not feel shackled to any such aesthetic impulse and his sound was expanding all the way to his untimely death, even if on the songs that became "from a basement on the hill" it seemed to be going supernova and collapsing in on itself.
"xo" is not quite as lush as the album that followed ("figure 8"--i seem to be one of the few elliott smith fans who has this as one of his very favourites) but it is more of a piece with it than anything that came before.
