 Virgo
Because of the presence of a galaxy cluster (consequently called the Virgo cluster) within its borders 5° to 10° west of Vindemiatrix (ε Vir), this constellation is especially rich in galaxies.
Some examples are M49[?] (elliptical), M58[?] (spiral), M59[?] (elliptical), M60[?] (elliptical), M61[?] (spiral), M84[?] (elliptical), M86[?] (elliptical), M87 (elliptical and a famous radiosource), and M90[?] (spiral).
A noted galaxy that is not part of the cluster is M104[?], an elliptical galaxy also called the Sombrero Galaxy.

Faulkes Telescope Educational Guide - Galaxies - Ellipticals
In general, an elliptical galaxy is given the label En, where the number n is determined by the galaxy shape.
Unless a galaxy is perfectly spherical (in which case it would be an E0, since the semi-major axis a, and the semi-minor axis b, would be equal), it will have a different appearance according to the direction from which we observe it.
Elliptical galaxies exhibit a much wider range of masses and sizes than their spiral counterparts; 100,000 to 10,000,000,000,000 solar masses according to one estimate, and diameters of between 1000 and 100 000

Hubble sequence - Wikipedia Mirror   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Elliptical galaxies are generally fairly low in gas and dust, and are composed mostly of older stars.
Spiral galaxies generally have plentiful supplies of gas and dust, and have a broad mix of older and younger stars.
From this, astronomers have constructed a theory of galaxy evolution which suggests that ellipticals are, in fact, the result of collisions between spiral and/or irregular galaxies, which strip out much of the gas and dust and randomize the orbits of the stars.

Faulkes Telescope Educational Guide - Galaxies
Unless a galaxy is perfectly spherical (in which case it would be an E0, since the semi-major axis a, and the semi-minor axis b, would be equal), it will have a different appearance depending on the direction from which it is seen.
Elliptical galaxies are simply vast collections of stars that remain relatively close together because of the gravitational attraction between them.
Colour photographs of ellipticals show that they are more red in colour than spirals (note, however, that the image of M32 at the top of this page is a false colour one!) This is because elliptical galaxies mostly contain older, cooler, and therefore redder stars.

Galaxy classification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Astronomers classify galaxies based on their overall shape (elliptical, spiral or barred spiral) and further by the specific properties of the individual galaxy (for example degree of ellipse, number of spirals or definition of bar).
E stands for elliptical while the number indicates how oval-shaped the ellipse is with 0 being ball shape (in other words, a giant globular cluster) to 7 being discus shape.

Galaxies are huge structures in the universe that are comprised of millions of stars held together by gravitational force.
The classification of elliptical galaxies is a measure of their deviation from a perfect circle, or their ellipticity.
Ellipticity is calculated by e = 1 - (b/a), where b is the length of the minor axis and a is the length of the major axis.

Elliptical Galaxies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Elliptical galaxies do not have arms and are found to be either nearly circular in shape (E0), or extrememly stretched and flattened out similar to that of a cigar (E7).
Hubble divided the elliptical galaxy classification into eight sub-classifications, E0 through E7: E0 - nearly circular, E1 - a little stretched, E2 - elongated, E3 - more elongated and flattened, E4 - even more elongated and flattened, until we reach E7 which is extrememly elongated and flattened.

M59 was discovered by Johann Gottfried Koehler on April 11, 1779, together with nearby M60, on the occasion of observing the comet of that year.
Charles Messier, also when observing that comet, found both galaxies four days later, on April 15 of that year, and in addition nearby M58 which Koehler missed.
Messier described M59 as equally faint as M58, and fainter than M60.
