Elliptical Galaxy M60 (also known as Messier Object 60, Messier 60, M60, or NGC 4649) is an elliptical galaxy (additional info and facts about elliptical galaxy) in the Virgo constellation (additional info and facts about Virgo constellation).
M60 is one of the giant elliptical galaxies of the Virgo Cluster (additional info and facts about Virgo Cluster).
Its distance is calculated to be of 60 million light year (The distance that light travels in a vacuum in 1 year; 5.88 trillion miles or 9.46 trillion kilometers) s away from Earth (The 3rd planet from the sun; the planet on which we live).

 Messier Object 60
M60 is one of the giant elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster of galaxies.
As the most following (eastern) Messier galaxy in this cluster, it is the last in a row of three (M58, M59, and M60), which comes into the field of view of a telescope pointed to this region of the sky.
A supernova, SN 2004W, was found in M60 as it had already faded to mag 18.8; this supernova was found to be of a subluminous subtype of type Ia. It had probably flashed up about half a year before, but remained unnoticed because M60 was close to its solar conjunction.

M59 is a member of the Virgo cluster of galaxies, and one of the larger elliptical galaxies there, although it is considerably less luminous and massive than the greatest ellipticals in this cluster, M49, M60 and, above all, M87.
M61 is one of the larger galaxies in the Virgo cluster; its 6 arc minutes of diameter correspond to about 100,000 light years, similar to the diameter of the Milky Way galaxy.
The pronounced grand-design spiral galaxy M81 forms a most conspicuous physical pair with its neighbor, M82, and is the brightest and probably dominant galaxy of a nearby group called M81 group.

Elliptical galaxy M60 and spiral companion NGC 4647
The bright elliptical galaxy Messier 60 (NGC 4649) in the Virgo cluster and its apparent spiral companion NGC 4647, shown in a color-composite view from exposures in B (blue) and I (near-infrared) filters with a Tektronix 800x800 CCD at the 2.1-meter telescope of Kitt Peak National Observatory.
In the elliptical, numerous globular clusters are apparent as the faint starlike objects around it, especially toward the spiral where the extra light gives their visibility a boost.

Hubble sequence - Art History Online Reference and Guide
Elliptical galaxies (E0-7) have an ellipsoidal form, with a fairly even distribution of stars throughout.
Elliptical galaxies are generally fairly low in gas and dust, and are composed mostly of older stars.
From this, astronomers have constructed a theory of galaxy evolution which suggests that ellipticals are, in fact, the result of collisions between spiral and/or irregular galaxies, which strip out much of the gas and dust and randomize the orbits of the stars.

It is this galaxy for which water megamasers detected in the radio orbiting very near the galaxy's center indicate the presence of a supermassive fl hole and allow an accurate kinematical measurement of the fl hole's mass.
This galaxy has been host to six historical supernovae, four of which are thought to arise from young, massive stellar progenitors, both near the nucleus and in the spiral arms, further evidence for the vigorous galactic star formation.

This was the star I wanted to see, and now we have it." Earlier this morning, Payload Specialist Sam Durrance successfully pointed the Astro telescopes at a somewhat challenging target, the elliptical galaxy M60, to enable the science teams to obtain an overall average spectrum of stars in its core.
Due to the faintness of this galaxy and the absence of suitable guide stars for automatic targeting, manual acquisition of this target was necessary.
Ultraviolet imaging also suppresses the cool star background of the galaxy, allowing the young hot stars to become more evident to astronomers studying the evolution of stars.

 NOAO Image Gallery: Elliptical Galaxies
Elliptical galaxies are spheroidal distributions of mostly older stars, usually without much of the intersteller material that is prevalent in spirals.
Ellipticals are often classified with a number that describes their appearance; an E0 galaxy is almost perfectly circular while an E7 is quite elongated.
Ellipticals vary greatly in size, from very small companions found near our own galaxy to the giant ellipticals often seen near the center of rich clusters.
