Ellis was born of Jewish parents in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Ellis recounted that she typically was sleeping when he left for school and was usually not at home when he returned.
The next year Ellis began teaching his new technique to other therapists and by 1957 he formally set forth the first cognitive behavioral psychotherapy by proposing that therapists help people adjust their thinking and behavior as the treatment for neuroses.

Although deeply disappointed by the election results, Carter soon began laying plans for a second gubernatorial campaign in 1970.
In the first race Carter had positioned himself as a moderate progressive alternative to the more liberal Arnall and the staunchly conservative-segregationist Maddox.
