Topic: Ellis Weiner

In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

  Ellis Weiner
Ellis Weiner was born on October 31, 1950.
This comprises the “official” biography that Weiner, or his publisher, or his publicist, or someone releases for standard public relations purposes.
In fact, Weiner was but one of six or seven “editors.” A review of the issues of that time reveals that his byline appears, in general, on only one article per month, many of which were group efforts, making almost impossible the assignment of appropriate authorial credit.

SANTA LIVES - Ellis Weiner - Penguin Books
Ellis Weiner, the co-author of the best-selling Yiddish with Dick and Jane, gets to the very heart of this cultural and marketing icon whose existence continues to bedevil inquisitive children, befuddled parents, and toy retailers around the world.
Using the kind of erudition and reasoning employed by the world's most advanced thinkers (and those people who make up standardized-test questions), Weiner offers five unimpeachable arguments for Santa's existence that are as inspired as they are insightful.
Weiner also explores the history of Santa, the existence of napkins, and the subtle but crucial distinctions between birthday cake and fruitcake—all copiously footnoted for reading pleasure.

A: No. I have no professional affiliation with Ellis Weiner apart from my management of the Ellis Weiner Website.
A: No. While Weiner’s works are reasonably amusing and diverting, it is in fact the case that they do not really merit academic consideration.
A: I am a devotee of his work—which fact does not blind me to certain flaws in his various writings, and in his character.

Pete Ingalls, the PI throwback with the overdrive mind and tongue to match, takes on the sordid, violent world of puppetry in his second adventure with a Chandler-style title (after 2004's Drop Dead, My Lovely).
Weiner, a former National Lampoon editor, uses a rapid-fire technique that sprays gags and gimmicks—some wildly off-target, some dead-on—in a parody of the hard-boiled PI novel.
The producers of PBS kids' show Playground Pals contact Ingalls because someone is flmailing them with a stolen outtake of obscene puppetry.

"Worry is fear harnessed to imagination." With this brilliant re-definition of an old bugaboo, Weiner begins this perfectly pitched spoof of the lifestyle how-to.
The "motivational" text is accompanied by sidebars delineating types of worry (fretting, brooding, etc.) and the number of calories burned by worrying about particular things (e.g., 311 calories burned for worrying about destruction of the ozone layer).
Author Ellis Weiner and illustrator Roz Chast, experts in the field of fretting, reveal how to maximize worry, harness its power, and achieve personal goals -- wealth, great sex, safer driving, and world travel.

My Response to a Seinfeld Jew by Don Feder - HUMAN EVENTS
It’s “court Jew” (in the Middle Ages: the Jewish advisor to a Christian monarch) and House n-word (the favored slave who worked in the plantation house, instead of sweating in the field).
Weiner endorses one of the classic canards of anti-Semitism: That if a Jew appears to be helping a Christian, it’s actually a clever ruse to exploit him.
Shortly after I saw the Weiner piece, someone sent me the following article by the inimitable Ben Stein – humorist, actor and commentator – written just before Christmas last year.

After reading the Barry Trotter parody, I was wondering whether perhaps my standards were too high.
Still, every time it starts to seem as if the parody is a bit too pat, Weiner pivots around and unexpectedly challenges the reader's expectations.
He also does a lovely job of satirizing Herbert's stylistic excesses, including the portentious interior monologues.
