The host unit for Ellsworth AFB is the 28th Bomb Wing and is assigned to Twelfth Air Force under Air Combat Command.
In January 1948, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen Carl A. Spaatz renamed it Weaver Air Force Base in honor of Brig Gen Walter R. Weaver, one of the pioneers in the development of the Air Force.
Currently, the 28th Bomb Wing and personnel from Ellsworth Air Force Base continue to be the lead wing for AEF 8, and Ellsworth personnel continue to prepare for ongoing deployments in support of operations around the globe.

Military Bases: Mission Transfers Affecting Ellsworth Air Force Base (Letter Report, 02/24/97, GAO/NSIAD-97-58).
In October 1996, the Air Force indicated that the consolidated facility at Dyess AFB should be operational in January 1998, pending completion of a major B-1B engine upgrade.
According to the Air Force, the National Guard's part-time workforce was incompatible with the bombers' nuclear mission because of a requirement for continuously monitoring all personnel directly involved with nuclear weapons.
According to the officials, Dyess is the logical choice because (1) the majority of the B-1B force structure is currently located there, (2) the capability is sufficient to handle the additional workload, and (3) it supports the Air Force goal of moving toward lean logistics and two (rather than three) levels of maintenance.

Commissioners said they were persuaded by the open air space around the base and by the analysis of the commission staff on the financial impact of closing the base.

The base closing commission voted Friday to keep open Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota — rejecting the Pentagon's plan to close it — as the panel labored toward conclusion of a politically delicate task that has brought alternating sighs of relief and exasperation in communities across America.
The Ellsworth proposal had caused the most political consternation since Pentagon proposed in May closing or consolidating a record 62 major military bases and 775 smaller installations to save $48.8 billion over 20 years, make the services more efficient and reposition the armed forces.
Air Force officials say their proposal as a whole is designed to make the service more effective by consolidating both weapons systems and personnel as the force moves to a smaller but smarter aircraft fleet.

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. - When the Pentagon announced that it wanted to shut down Ellsworth Air Force Base, it was an enormous setback for Sen. John Thune.
Thune responded to the Ellsworth news by going on the offensive: He and fellow South Dakota leaders from both parties launched an intense lobbying effort.
But supporters of Ellsworth said it was saved because they were able to show it would be risky to place all the nation's B-1 bombers in one location, because a single storm or terrorism attack could incapacitate the entire fleet.

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- Friday's announcement that Ellsworth Air Force Base, home to nearly half of the nation's 900 mph-plus B-1B bombers, could be closed was a supersonic shock for local and state officials.
Efforts to get Ellsworth off the list will begin Monday when Department of Defense data that was used to justify closing the base will be available, the Ellsworth Task Force, state congressional delegation, and Gov. Mike Rounds say.
Thune says two other studies of military bases are unfinished, and it makes no sense to go ahead with closings until all results are in, including a review of American bases in other countries.
