  Ellsworth County, Part 1
ELLSWORTH County is comprised in that portion of the State of Kansas which commences at the east line of Range 6, west of the Sixth Principal Meridian, running thence west to the west line of Range 10, and embracing Townships 14, 15, 16 and 17.
The county is bounded on the north by Lincoln County, on the south by Rice County, on the east by Saline and the northern portion of McPherson, and on the west by the south half of Russell County and the north half of Barton.
The face of the county is considerably scarified with creeks, all of which, with the exception of Elkhorn on the north, and Plum Creek on the south, empty into the Smoky Hill River, the course of the latter being from the northwest to the southeast.

When the name was adopted for the county it was supposed that the fort had been named in honor of Colonel E. Ellsworth of national fame.
It was renamed Fort Harker in 1866 and was abandoned in 1872.  The fort, the town, and the county were named for Lt Allen Ellsworth, Co. H, 7th Iowa Cavalry.

Ellsworth was a bustling cattle town for a time during the late 1860s and well into the 1880s, during which time it was the scene of numerous killings following shootouts between drunken cowboys.

From Ellsworth east, the road goes to the Missouri state line, and west from Ellsworth, you can follow it to Russell County, where it dead-ends at Interstate 70.
