In 1975 the Borough of Richmond was renamed the Borough of Staten Island.
From 1931 to 1937 the island was used as a bird quarantine station for imported parrots.
Staten Island bears much of the loss of life, nearly 300 residents, with a large numbers of firemen and World Trade Center workers living on Staten Island.

When an official aid to navigation was placed at this point on Staten Island, it was appropriately named the Elm Tree Lighthouse for the tree whose purpose the tower had supplanted.
The beacon was situated on the south side of the island, near the shoreline, and functioned as a front range light, operating in conjunction with the New Dorp Lighthouse located on a hill, 1.8 miles inland.
In 1939, the old wooden Elm Tree Lighthouse was torn down, and the beacon was moved to a 65-foot tall concrete tower.

Originally was called Staten Eylandt by the Dutch after the Dutch governing body, The Dutch found themselves having to buy this sixty square mile island a total of five time first settled the island in 1661 along with a group of Huguenots.
The Dutch surrendered Staten Island to the English in 1664, who in turn made the final purchase of the Island in 1670 from the Indians.

Winding along the hillside of a beautiful residential area on Staten Island, we finally located one of the "newer" lights, but confusion set in as we realized this was in-part a private residence.
Vehicles filled the parking area and people were everywhere as the reenactment of the French and Indian war during the 1700's unfolded with characters portraying the early settlers in garb to match.
Parking was at a premium and photography nearly impossible, while scooting in between vehicles on the pavement, realizing height much lower than rearview windows, Dennis oversaw "safety first" the entire time we were there.

Eighteen birds have tested positive for the virus and 56 mosquito pools have been identified in the borough, compared to 55 birds and 93 pools in 2002, according to statistics from the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
