  Elmer Rees
Professor Elmer Rees, FRSE (born 1941) is a mathematician with publications in area ranging from topology, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, linear algebra and Morse theory to robotics.
Rees was born in Llandybie and grew up in Wales.
One of his most notable legacy was the establishment of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences.

William H. Rees, a prominent physician and surgeon of Pleasanton, Kan., is a native of Monmouth, Ill., where he was born April 25, 1843.
He came west in 1832, and was one of the pioneers of Monmouth, Ill. The mother was born near Louisville, Ky. They removed to Kansas in 1867, locating near Pleasanton, where they resided on a farm until their respective deaths, the mother dying in 1878, aged sixty-three, and the father, Dec. 18, 1880, aged sixty-nine.
They became the parents of six children—five of whom are living: Dr. John B. Rees, of Mapleton; Elmer Rees, of Pleasanton; Fanny, the wife of Samuel H. Braden, of Elsmore; Rachel J., the wife of Arthur Ball, of Mapleton; and Dr. William H. Rees.

The Rees family, who were among the early settlers of Palo Alto township but who are now scattered to many different places, have the past week been enjoying a very happy family reunion, the first time that so many of them have had the privilege of being together for a long time.

Rees was born 74 years ago in Newark and with the exception of a few years which he spent in Granville as a tailor, always made Newark his home.
Surviving are two sons, Walter of the home, and Elmer Rees of Washington, D. C., ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a brother, William Rees of Newark.

 Conference pays tribute to Edinburgh scholar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In celebration of this centenary, over 200 people attended a week long conference held at the University of Otago this summer.
Two of the plenary talks were delivered by Professor Elmer Rees, the current holder of the Chair of Mathematics held by Aitken from 1946 to 1965.
A book of memoirs, To catch the spirit, was published during the conference, half of which is based on his diaries covering the first 20 years that he spent in Edinburgh.

In the summer of 1993 John Ball and Elmer Rees got me interested in the idea of becoming Scientific Director of ICMS, at that time recently set up.
I was to continue in my Oxford position (all this facilitated by an EPSRC Senior Fellowship), and spend as much time in Edinburgh as my ICMS duties required.
At ICMS we must now strive to maintain high standards, to take advantage of new opportunities as they arise, to enhance what has the potential to be an even greater national asset.

The Newton Institute has a National Advisory Board, set up in 1999 at the suggestion of the EPSRC, that advises the Director on all matters relating to the national role of the Institute.
Since its inception, the Board has been chaired by Professor Adrian Smith; his term of office has now expired and the new chairman is Professor Elmer Rees.

Under the terms of this Lectureship, every two years an eminent mathematician in the United Kingdom is selected (by the London Mathematical Society Council in consultation with the NZ Mathematical Society Council) to tour New Zealand for a period of three to four weeks and to give lectures in the six main NZ university centres.
The first Forder Lecturer was Professor Christopher Zeeman in 1987, and was followed by Professor Sir Michael Atiyah in 1989, Professor Peter Whittle in 1991, Professor Roger Penrose in 1993, and Professor Elmer Rees in 1995.
The Forder Lecturer for 1997 will be Professor Ian Stewart of the University of Warwick.

Also submissions were made to the NZ Qualifications Authority on their draft unit standards in Mathematics, and Council is keeping a watching brief on possible changes to Bursary exams.
The fifth Forder Lecturer is Elmer Rees, of the University of Edinburgh, a particularly appropriate choice in this Aitken Centenary year as he is the current holder of the Chair previously occupied by Aitken in Edinburgh.
We are grateful to the British Council and the London Mathematical Society for supporting his visit.
