Elmhurst is a legendary neighborhood in Queens, one of the Five Boroughs of New York City.
Elmhurst is home to Queens Center Mall (the most profitable mall per square foot in the US), Queens Place and several other shopping centers.
The Elmhurst area was developed and renamed in the 1890s by Cord Meyer, who wanted to disassociate the area with polluted Newtown Creek, although the Newtown name remains in the Grand Avenue/Newtown subway station, the local high school, and in The Reformed Church of Newtown.

Hannah Shi, a dear family member relating to members of Grace Chinese Lutheran Church in Elmhurst, Queens, New York, was killed in Thailand when a tidal wave struck and destroyed the hotel where she had been staying.
She was the first New Yorker to be identified as a casualty of the Indian Ocean tsunami of Dec. 26 that has claimed an estimated 150,000 lives.
