Elmina is a lovely little town, curved around the back of a large south-facing crescent bay that gradually rises into a series of small hills behind the town.
A red Catholic church dominates Elmina from a hill to the north, while bang in the middle of town is a striking Methodist church; finally a Presbyterian church to the northeast is a vivid reminder that Ghana is home to a staggering number of different brands of Christianity.
Elmina's touts have a long way to go before they're up to Malian standards, but it would be awful if, in ten years' time, visitors just think of it as a pretty place that's spoiled by the hassle.

Today, Elmina continues with its majesty, always looking at the sea, like a guide of the little town of fishermen that although it has grown it continues being the same one in essence.
On the superior part of the castle the whole defensive scaffolding: cannons overlooking the sea, the commander’s headquarters and other constructions from where the conquerors restrains the whole town and a piece of sea that beats with fury on the rocks that serve as foundations to the construction.
Elmina is today a seemingly inoffensive museum, and it is until beautiful when it is looked from out.

A visit to Elmina Castle is both memorable and moving, for within these walls many significant events took place that literally shaped the history of the world.
In no time at all, Elmina became the centre of a thriving trade in gold, ivory and slaves, which were exchanged for cloth, beads, brass, bracelets and other goods brought by the Portuguese.
As the immensely profitable trade in gold and slaves in Elmina increased, it began to attract the attention of other European nations, and a struggle for control of the Castle ensued.

The storerooms of the castle were converted into dungeons, and the ownership of the castle changed hands several times, eventually ending up being seized by the British in 1872.

Since Elmina served as headquarters for Portuguese trade in Africa, it was considered one of the most important possessions of the empire.
English forts west of the mouth of the Sweet or Kakum River (between Elmina and Cape Coast) were ceded to the Dutch, and Dutch forts to the east became British....When the transfer to the British was effected in 1872, much of the Elmina population refused to recognize the British authority.
The British responded to the Elmina insurrection by proclaiming martial law and ordering the surrender of all arms at the castle....On June 13, 1873, the 'disaffected' portion of town, lying immediately in front of the castle, was surrounded.

Elmina was on U.S. Highway 75 some twelve miles southeast of Huntsville in Walker County.

This fort was used for military purpose only, it had no commercial warehouses, but contained quarters for officers and soldiers who came on rotation duty from the castle.

Originally built in the 1400's by the Portuguese, it was taken over by the Dutch in the 1600's and used to "house" slaves while they awaited the slave ships to arrive across the Atlantic.
This is an interesting story in itself, which involves tricking the English into believing they were given the famous golden stool of the Ashanti, when in fact the Queen Mother had a false one made up to fool them.
