By BROOKE J. The city of Elmira and New York Sen. Charles Schumer want the state and federal government to consider the crumbling Armory building an emergency situation.
At an Elmira City Council workshop meeting Thursday, Mayor John Tonello told the council and department heads he hopes the city can obtain emergency funds to cover repair and relocation costs since bricks fell from the facade of the Armory building on March 10.
Elmira Police Chief W. Scott Drake III is hopeful the city will receive emergency funds to help the force find a permanent home.

The 2nd was also known as the "Harris Light Cavalry" (after the unit's benefactor, Senator Ira Harris), the "7th United States," and "The New York State Cavalry." The troopers were recruited under the direction of Colonel J. Mansfield Davies and were organized in Scarsdale NY in July of 1861.
New York Governor Morgan commissioned Davies as Colonel, H. Judson Kilpatrick of New Jersey as Lt. Colonel, Henry E. Davies, Alfred N. Duffie and Otto Harhaus as majors, Julius Lorell as Adjutant, William H. Vallance as Quartermaster, and Charles E. Hackley as Regimental Surgeon.
An arrangement was made for the unit to be transferred to the state of New York and named the "7th New York Cavalry." In December of 1862, the designation would be changed to the "2nd" regiment.

Elmira's African-American community did not come in great numbers until after about 1840, although some early settlers brought free fls and slaves.
Slavery was finally abolished in New York State in 1827, so there were no slaves listed in the 1830 census, but instead were listed around 300 "free colored people." Some Elmira churches took a moral stand against slavery in 1840, and, after which, African Americans began arriving.
The setting of this small gem was then the geographical center of Elmira, New York, bounded north by the Lackawanna Railroad, east by Lake Street, south by Clinton and west by the Chemung Canal – later old State Street.

Friends arrived from Virginia, Massachusetts, Missouri, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, and New York to be a part of this wonderful weekend.
Gary Yoggy (who arranged for Gale to be the guest star and who was director of the show), and the cast of the Elmira Little Theatre, were very friendly and we could feel the excitement as they rehearsed and performed with Gale Storm.
