Elmo Sylvester Hope was born in New York on June 27, 1923, began piano studies by age seven and went on to win prizes for his piano recitals.
Hope was suffering from respiratory aliments, and the dry climate suited him just fine.
Elmo Hope would reemerge in 1963 to record “Sounds from Riker’s Island” (Audio-fidelity) and it was not until 1966 he would record two more as a trio for the same label.

A life crowned with promise and little achievement, the legend of Elmo Hope is indicative not just of this particular pianist's mix of mishap and flaw, but of the misfortune and shortcoming of the bebop pianist in general, his repertoire, his narrow approach, and his cruel environment.
Hope's wife and fellow pianist Bertha (they married in 1960) has helped to keep his music in the public domain, touring with both her own quartet and a repertory band called ELMOllenium.

Hope's follows Foster's flanging, R&B-flavored salvo with a solo that is at once delicate and driving, as if to his sideman in a playful way the virtues of restraint.
Hope caps the session with the beautiful duet "Tranquility," a rare, at least for this date anyway, chance to hear Bond with bow.

After the quintet date, Hope was a sideman for another Lou Donaldson-led Blue Note session in August; and a Sonny Rollins date for Prestige in that same month.
In 1967 Elmo was hospitalized with pneumonia for several weeks and while recuperating, succumbed to an apparent heart attack.

The pianist and composer, Elmo Hope (1923-1967) was one of the most gifted and original artists of the hard bop period.
Hope also left a substantial legacy of intriguing and memorable compositions and must be ranked highly among the many talented composers of his period including Benny Golson, Gigi Gryce, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver, Herbie Nichols, Kenny Dorham, Randy Weston and Hank Mobley.
The music of Elmo Hope is being kept alive through an ensemble called ELMOllenium, led by his widow, pianist Bertha Hope.

Elmo Hope was the third member of a trio of close friends and pioneering jazz pianists, the other two members of which were Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell.
All three suffered from drug addiction: Monk lived the longest: Powell died at 42 in 1966 and Hope died in 1967 at the age of 43,leaving a legacy of recorded compositions, very few of which were recoverable in written form.
This recording reveals that Elmo Hope was an important composer of great depth and originality, rivalling Monk himself, and for that we owe Don Sickler and New Stories an everlasting debt.

He first heads a four-song jam session (two swinging originals and a couple of standards) that has lengthy solos from trumpeter Donald Byrd and the contrasting tenors John Coltrane and Hank Mobley, along with fine support from bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Jones.
The 1961 dates consist of a sextet outing with trumpeter Blue Mitchell and the tenors of Jimmy Heath and Frank Foster, plus four numbers played with the trio from the album (which has bassist Percy Heath and drummer Philly Joe Jones).
Other than a version of "Imagination," all of the selections from 1961 are Hope's intriguing and ultimately logical originals.

This decent bop session features tenor-saxophonist Frank Foster and pianist Elmo Hope in a quintet with the forgotten trumpeter Freeman Lee (who is on three of the six songs), bassist John Ore and drummer Art Taylor.
They perform three of Hope's originals, two by Foster and an uptempo version of "Georgia on My Mind." None of the originals caught on (when was the last time anyone played "Fosterity"?) and nothing that innovative occurs but the music should please bop fans.

Saxophonist Archie Shepp played an Elmo Hope tribute on last weekend's London visit, but mostly you can go years without hearing this short-lived piano-and-composing original's name mentioned.
When Hope died of drug-related health problems at 43 in 1967, he had shared the stage with John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Clifford Brown; though the jazz world had began to notice him for the compositional impact he made on saxophonist Harold Land's cult late-1950s recording, The Fox.
Though almost all the pieces are originals, the idiomatically open exploration (Hope had strong classical leanings) of Sweet and Lovely is delectable.

Hope reminds me a bit of Wynton Kelly with some of the angular, hard attack of Monk.
It’s a mystery why Hope remains obscure while Kelly, Red Garland, and others have achieved some level of name recognition.
