Talk:ELO rating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The rating systems in place today are a political compromise between mathematicians who would like to estimate hypothetical parameters accurately and players who want each game to be a fight over the rating points they win and lose.
Yes, the ELO system has certainly been used to measure the depth of games in the manner described by the paragraphs which were removed from the article.
Elo system has theoretical underpinnings that make it a true statistical estimator, at least when K is set sufficiently low.

ELO rating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ELO rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in two-player games such as chess and Go.
ELO is often written in capital letters, but is not an acronym.
ELO ranking for games without the possibility of draws (Go, Backgammon) is discussed in Go rating with ELO.

SL Dueling Ladder - Information   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
It is important to understand that the provisional rating formula provides only a very rough estimate of where the dueler stands, and it is not until the dueler has competed several matches with an actual Elo rating that his or her rating can begin to converge on his abilities.
Elo's recommended K-factors were 32 for regular chess players and 16 for masters (masters are high-rated chess players, and a lower K-factor simply means that they don't move in rating as much because they stand to gain or lose less); in actual implementation, the K-factors used were 30 and 10, respectively.
Thus, as the dueler duels more matches, the provisional rating tax is steadily removed until the dueler reaches his or her tenth match, at which point the tax is completely removed and the dueler's displayed rating is the dueler's true provisional rating.

 ELO rating system
Elo was a master-level chess player and an active participant in the United States Chess Federation from its founding in 1939.
Elo's central assumption was that the chess "performance" of any given player in any given game would be a hypothetical normally distributed random variable, with a mean value that represented the player's true skill, and would change only slowly.
Elo suggested scaling ratings so that a difference of 200 rating points would mean that the stronger player has an expected score of approximately 0.75, and the USCF initially aimed for an average club player to have a rating of 1500.

But I digress, when Elo says that the ratings are accurate to a 50 point range he is stating that a player with a current rating of 2500 has a 95% probability of having a playing strength that falls between 2450 and 2550.
In particular the Elo rating system is not only not accurate, it is also not based on sound mathematical principles, it has never been published in a renowned mathematical journal and has never been peer-reviewed by a mathematician.
Her new Elo rating will be 3000, when a conservative constant K of 10 is used (this constant is used for Grandmasters), and it will be 4000 if a more "realistic" constant K of 20 is used.

Their initial point rating (for use by the ratings formula) is the “average” value for the ranking’s point scale range, since it’s not feasible to accurately “estimate” where in the ranking classifications point range a player might be (estimating the ranking level alone is difficult enough).
The ratings systems may not be identical (although they might be based on the same principles), the rating pools (the player base in the systems) may differ, and the matches may have been played under different conditions.
That means that ratings are not re-evaluated after each match, and the “new” ratings are computed/adjusted from the “old” ones adding all points he gained/lost from the matches the player completed at any tournament(s) since the previous publishing date.

Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A rating system is an attempt to quantitatively represent the strengths of individuals engaging in a competitive activity.
In the rating system I am using, the ratings are not an absolute (or ratio) scale; only the differences between ratings are informative.
For example, the ratings of NCAA women's teams are not comparable to ratings of NCAA men's teams, although the distribution of ratings within each group is informative about the range of strengths within the rating pools.

The Elo rating system tries to predict the probability that a given player will beat another player based on their ratings.
By the way, the 400 is used to fit the ratings along a normal distribution curve desired for chess ratings.

It means that the ratings are not reevaluated after each game (round) and the "new" ratings are computed from the "old" ones adding all contributions from the games the player completed at a given tournament.

 Bayesian Elo Rating
The problem of Elo evaluation consists in estimating the Elo rating of a set of players, from the observation of results of their games.
The fundamental Elo formula can be reversed to obtain an estimation of the rating difference between two players, as a function of the average score.
Iterative method to solve a fixed-point equation, so that the rating of every player is in accordance to the reverse Elo formula, assuming an expected result equal to the average score, against an opponent whose Elo is equal to the average opponent.

Professor Elo made significant modifications and improvements to the existing rating system, but what he did was mathematically trivial, something which any average graduate student of mathematics or statistics could have done with the data already available from the existing rating system.
The basics of the rating system was that if you achieved an even score in a tournament, your performance rating was the rating of your average opponent.
Throughout this period, a player rated over 2700 was called a grandmaster, as player rated over 2500 was a senior master, a player over 2300 was a master and a player over 2100 was an expert.

Each player has a rating which is a real number; 2.
Then, for each of the first N wins, Player A's rating X is less than RT, so Player A gains at least G(2*RT-RA-RB) rating points for that win.

If you did not have an"established" Elõ rating before, your SPs will have risen by more than your Elõ rating to reflect the greater confidence in the accuracy of your Elõ rating now that you have played more tournament games - so newer players' SPs may rise even if their Elõ rating has fallen.
If you are outside the top 30 or so, to see whether or not your rating has improved it is best to look at how your rating has changed rather than your position.
This is because the constant influx of completely new players and newish players (whose seeding deductions disappear as they play more tournaments and their Elõ rating becomes established) may drop you down the table even if your rating stays the same.

The coefficient K determines the relative weight given to the pre-event rating and the event performance rating.
