American Waterweed (Elodea canadensis) - A Native aquatic plant in Washington
American waterweed (Elodea canadensis) is what many people commonly think of as "that aquarium plant." It is also known by several other common names such as Canadian waterweed, common elodea, or anacharis.
American waterweed is an attractive aquarium plant, and is a good substitute for Brazilian elodea since it is native to Washington's lakes, ponds, and rivers.
Brazilian elodea is also a much larger, bushy plant with longer leaves.

Egeria densa - Brazilian Elodea - A Probem Aquatic Plant in the Western USA
Brazilian elodea is native to the central Minas Geraes region of Brazil and to the coastal areas of Argentina and Uruguay.
Brazilian elodea is a submersed, freshwater perennial herb, generally rooted on the bottom in depths of up-to-20 feet or drifting.
The absence of sexual reproduction in introduced populations of Brazilian elodea emphasizes the importance of the vegetative growth phase of the plant.

Science NetLinks: Plasmolysis in Elodea Plant Cells
By adding salt water to the Elodea cell environment, students will observe the process of plasmolysis, shrinkage of the cell contents due to water loss.
Distribute copies of the Plasmolysis in Elodea Plant Cells student sheet to all students.
As students answer the questions, sketch an Elodea plant cell on the board, filling in the cell with the subcellular structures being discussed.

Brazilian Elodea (Egeria densa) - A Problem Aquatic Plant in Washington
Brazilian elodea is native to the central Minas Geraes region of Brazil and to the coastal areas of Argentina and Uruguay.
Brazilian elodea is a submersed, freshwater perennial herb, generally rooted on the bottom in depths of up to 20 feet or drifting.
Brazilian elodea is highly preferred over most native species and theoretically, it should be possible to remove Brazilian elodea while favoring the growth of native species.

Cerexagri-Nisso LLC: Submersed Aquatic Plant and Algae Guide: Submersed Plants: Elodea
Rooted in the substrate, vegetative reproduction is by stem fragments.
Elodea differs from hydrilla and egeria in having smaller plant and leaf size, consistent whorls of 3 leaves, and a lack of spines on the lower part of the underside of the midvein.
While elodea can produce dense colonies and requires control in certain areas, it does not often become a nuisance.

 Elodea
In a living elodea cell you can “roughly” tell where the vacuole is by where the moving chloroplasts are not able to go.
If you were to surround this group of plant cells with salt water then the water inside the plant would move from where there is more water (less salt) through the cell wall and membrane to the outside where there is less water (more salt).

 Elodea
There is but one great all-round warm-water aquarium "anacharis" formerly of the genus "Elodea" now Egeria, a few coldwater varieties (unfortunately all-too-often mis-sold as tropicals) and the "other" names are fallacious.
Egeria is another recent (1961) erected genus for a similar plant (the one of most interest to aquarists) that produces 2 to 4 flowers (Elodea only 1), that have large and deeply white petals (versus small and colorless), and are pollinated by insects (elodeas is done via water).
We'll list the "king of anacharis" in the genus Egeria, the three most common species of Elodea encountered in the trade and one that is oft mis-labeled as an elodea.
