Families: Pholidophoridae, Archaeornenidae, Oligopleuridae, Leptolepidae, Elopidae, Albuhdae, Mormyridae, Hyodontidae, Notopteridae, Osteoglossidae, Pantodontidae, Ctenothrissidae, Phractolaemidae, Saurodontidae, Chirocentridae, Clupeidae, Chanidae, Salmonidae, Alepocephalidae, Stomiatidae, Gonorhyochidae, Cromeriidae.
The hrst four families, of Triassic to Cretaceous age, are so closely connected with these Ganoids that their allocation to the Teleosteans must be regarded as provisional.
The Elopidae and Albulidae are also low forms, traced back to the Cretaceous seas, having points in common with the Ganoids (gular plate in the former, conus arteriosus with two rows of valves in the latter).

Description Tarpon - Megalops atlanticus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
While most agree on the fish's placement in the order Elopiformes, scientists debate whether its family designation should fall within the family Elopidae or the family Megalopidae, a family separate from Elopidae within the suborder Elopoidei.
Tarpon reach sexual maturity at 6-7 years of age and a length of about 4 feet (1.2 m).
Tarpon possess a leptocephalus larval stage, a reproductive strategy seen elsewhere only amongst the closely related bonefish (Albulidae), ladyfish (Elopidae), and true eels (Anguilliformes).

(1966), Forey (1973a, 1973b), and Nelson (1984) recognized the Megalopidae and Elopidae as separate families within the suborder Elopoidei.
MORPHOLOGY: The tarpon is herring-like in general appearance but is readily distinguished from clupeids by the presence of an elongate bony angular plate between the branches of the lower jaw and a much larger mouth; the jaw extends considerably posterior to the rear edge of the orbit.
The belly is not keeled or serrated as in herrings, but is relatively broad and covered with ordinary scales.*223* The following description of the Elopidae is summarized form Jordan and Evermann (1969).
