  Elsecar Low Pit Colliery Check   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The checks are from Elsecar Low Pit in Yorkshire and are double sided bearing the legend "E.F.W. 1882" on their reverse sides.
The pit was sunk in 1840 and reached the Barnsley Bed Coal Seam at a depth of 117 yards.
The mine was worked using the pillar and stall method with roadways being driven to the boundary of the royalty and then retreated back to the shafts.

 Host line - Elsecar Railway
The current Elsecar Railway was built by Barnsley Council to provide an added attraction to the Elsecar Heritage village.
It currently runs for 1 mile for Elsecar to Hemingfield with 1 station at Elsecar, which was built as new by Barnsley Council around 10 years ago.
Cortonwood itself is expected to be the new operational base for the Elsecar Railway, with sidings and a large shed planned.

Elsecar has close historic ties with Wentworth, having been the location of many of the Fitzwilliam family's early industrial ventures.
Although now built up and merged with the nearby town of Hoyland, Elsecar still retains a number of rows of attractive stone-built cottages originally put up by the Fitzwilliams for their workers, along with Milton Hall (originally built by the 6th Earl to house an industrial exhibition in 1886).
Elsecar also has a very fine park, built in the traditional style with a bandstand and childrens playground.

 HISTORY of the DEARNE & DOVE CANAL
On 3 December 1798 the canal was opened from Swinton to the end of the Elsecar Branch.
The proposal in the Act for a lockless Elsecar Branch involving deep cuttings was changed in 1796 to a more realistic line with six locks.
In 1934 the last boat navigated through to Barnsley and the main line was closed except for almost a mile at Barnsley and the same distance at the other end from Manvers Main Colliery to Swinton.

 ELSECAR ROUTE DESCRIPTION
This canal is the Elsecar branch of the Dearne and Dove Canal which joined the Barnsley Canal with the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation and was used mainly for carrying coal.
The Elsecar branch opened in 1798 and closed in 1928 due to subsidence.
One of the treasures of the Centre is the Newcomen Beam Engine constructed in 1795, and used to pump water from the Elsecar colliery.

Directions will take you to Elsecar, which is the only operational station on the railway.
The railway is the other side of the Elsecar site to where you enter.
Follow the one-way system through Hoyland (left then straight on via right hand lane, then straight on via left hand lane) Follow this road through Elsecar village to the Heritage centre at the bottom of the hill.

The Elsecar Newcomen Engine is the last Newcomen Atmospheric Engine to remain on its original foundations.
Although it has been substantially modified over the years with a new cylinder, piston and beam it remains a unique monument to our industrial past.

SHOPPERS could soon be travelling from Elsecar to Cortonwood by train and returning by boat.
The Elsecar Railway Preservation Group wants to set up a park and ride scheme to the retail park and have also made tentative approaches to Barnsley Canal Group.
The group has added a two carriage diesel engine to its fleet which currently travels from Elsecar to Tingle Lane, Hemmingfield and are waiting for another one to arrive in the next two to three months.
