It is no wonder, then, that traditional owners of the Gregory National Park, in the north west of the Northern Territory, decided to visit Nitmiluk’s traditional owners to hear about their experiences with joint management.
The Northern Territory Parks and Reserves (Framework for the Future) legislation will return Aboriginal freehold title to the land (under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act) to the traditional owners of Gregory National Park - in return for incuding a significant area of existing Aboriginal land into the park.

The thermal pool, actually in Elsey National Park, but seemingly part of the resort, is the main attraction – it’s free, always open, and the water is a pleasant 34°C. A soak in the palm-shaded, pale blue water is divine, with early mornings or candlelit night-time dips less crowded.
South of town the Elsey National Park leads to the often-overlooked freshwater wetlands of the Roper River.
A twelve-kilometre road into ELSEY NATIONAL PARK (turn off just before the Mataranka Homestead) leads to a more secluded campsite with less of a holiday-camp atmosphere, offering canoe rental and swimming in the (almost croc-free) upper Roper River, as well as a small kiosk.
