The initiative is to be cost-shared, with First Nations expected to assume 25 per cent of the cost related to inshore fisheries in the first year, 50 per cent in the second year, 75 per cent in the third year and to assume the full cost in the fourth year.
First Nations require additional support over the coming years to acquire the expertise to manage their fisheries operations, maintain and replace vessels, gear and other assets for the benefit of fishers and the community.
While First Nations affected by the Marshall decision have increased their participation in the commercial fishery, Aboriginal fishers are not yet fishing all the species to which they have access.
