Welcome to Elstree Calling, which is my unofficial website dedicated to Elstree Studios, a busy and historic film and TV studio facility which is located in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, close to Central London.
Elstree Studios has long been the home of some of the very-best film and television productions made in this country and this website celebrates it's long history.
It was founded and is run by the film and television historian Paul Burton, and is in no-way connected to Elstree Studios Ltd. or the current owners of the studios, Hertsmere Borough Council.

The largest facilities were the MGM-British Studios and the Associated British Pictures Corporation studio - later known as Elstree Studios.
Property developers bought the studios for redevelopment but despite some reduction in size they are still flourishing and producing many films known around the world -quite erroneously- as "Hollywood" productions.
Before ATV the studios were known as the British National Studios and, in the fifties, several big series were made there for American television - including the Douglas Fairbanks Presents series and the Alfred Hitchcock tv series.

Originally a small rural hamlet, it was the construction of the Midland Railway and the opening of Elstree Station in 1868 that led to the expansion of Borehamwood.
Elstree forge dates from C.1878 and other late medieval houses and buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries can also be found in the High Street.
Elstree parish included the whole of Borehamwood until the daughter church, All Saints, was built in 1909.
