  Elswick Harriers Club History
Elswick Harriers are the oldest established athletic club in the North East of England having been founded in 1889, the same year that the Amateur Athletic Associations recommended rules became compulsory for all athletics in Britain.
Elswick Harriers have had many famous characters in their long history with Frank Melville being the first famous name winning the 1908 Morpeth to Newcastle Road Race, and in the years 1907 - 1909 being without peer in the North of England.
Elswick compete in both local and national competitions but are always actively seeking new members of all ages and abilities.

Elswick PLC was itself taken over in 1994 by a larger print and packaging group and has been swallowed up inside it.

The signing received attention because Elswick was the first player to come to SIU on a scholarship to play the position of libero, a position for defensive specialists that has been used widely in the United States since only 1999.
With Elswick, the program knew that they had a legitimate defensive specialist who would immediately be ready to take on the responsibilities of the position.
The pure enjoyment Elswick already had for volleyball increased as she became introduced to a position which suited her physical abilities.
