All About Romance: Elizabeth Grayson reviews Yankee Stranger by Elswyth Thane
At the core of the book is the deeply engaging story of a Southern belle and a Northern journalist, but Thane has intertwined their lives with a forbidden love between cousins, the enduring bonds between husband and wife, and a wondrous sense of history.
Because Thane (who was the wife of oceanographic explorer Dr. William Beebe) wrote most of the books in the forties, there is unquestionable passion, but no sex.
These books and Thane's others inspired me to write because they convinced me that the stories I wanted to tell - stories of love and family and women's adventures - the kind of stories I am writing now - were legitimate, valid.

Overview of The Williamsburg Novels   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The Williamsburg series of historical novels by Elswyth Thane (1900-1981), originally published in the 1940s and early 1950s, consists of seven books spanning almost 170 years of the fictional Day and Sprague families.
Also, given the definition of historical fiction as fiction set during times before the author's lifetime, and that Elswyth Thane was born in 1900, technically the last four books do not qualify as historical fiction.
Indeed, since Thane was writing during the late 1940s and early 1950s, the last few books were written from a fairly recent time-perspective.

 Re: Elswyth Thane question
I don't remember who the original publisher was (my local library has a copy from the Aeolian Press) but the copy I bought the other evening is from Hawthorne Press.
Mousing around in my local library database I found that they owned a couple other books by Thane brought out by Hawthorne, and one was marked "newly abridged" in the early 70's (most of these books were written in the 40's).
It doesn't say anything anywhere on the copy I bought about it being a subsequent edition or being abridged -- the title page, and indeed most of the pages seem to be an exact replica of the original printing (I remember the typeface) but it's a very clean copy for supposedly being printed in 1945.

A couple of years ago, I ran into what looked to be a clean copy of "Ever After" at a local bookstore, and bought it, happy to have a copy of a work I remembered from my childhood.
Thane was an author of her time, writing about another time, and in both of them social drinking was an accepted thing, but none of her characters drank excessively, and it would be hard to interpret her books as endorsing alcohol, so the edits were very mysterious.
