Elvan Abeylegesse (also formerly: '''Hewan Abeye''' (Amharic) and '''Elvan Can''' (Turkish)) (born September 11, 1982) is an Ethiopian-born Turkish woman middle and long distance track and field athlete, running in the disciplines 1500 m, 3000 m and 5000 m, but also 10000 m, 2 miles and cross country, ranking world 7th.
Elvan’s career in the international arena began at the age of 18 in Grosseto, Italy in 2001 by winning the European 3000 m and 5000 m titles, setting a national record for Turkey, a country not well known in long distance running.
Elvan Abeylegesse now is the first woman to have run faster than the Fin.

The slight athlete, who weighs just 41 kilograms for her 1.59 metres, pushed world title-holder Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia into second in 14:30.88 in a race that upheld the tradition of middle and long distance world records set at the Bislett Games, which were taking place in Bergen while the stadium in Oslo is rebuilt.

In 2004, the record did not survive after Elvan Abeylegesse accelerated to the front with successive 66 and 67 second laps, to split the field.
Abeylegesse surely must have sensed this, as she went to the front with a purpose.
Having recently, on the 30th May, run 3:58.28 for 1500m, the speed was certainly there, whether the speed endurance was also in the tank would be evident towards the end when the early push for home and the record would have an affect on her.

She broke from the field at the 3-k point (8:37.84), building an almost seven second lead with four laps remaining, a margin she extended to nine seconds a lap later.

It is remembered that the Ethiopian federation went as far as banned her from training in Addis prior to the Athens Olympics (even though her whole family resides there).
In Elvan's case, it is perhaps this difficult choice that paved the way to her success.

World 5000m record holder Elvan Abeylegesse heads the entries for the 10th edition of the European Cup 10000m which takes place in Antalya, in her home country of Turkey, on Saturday 15 April.
Saturday‚s race will be Abeylegesse‚s first competition since the European Cup Second League match in Istanbul last June.
Abeylegesse is the current holder of the Turkish 10000m record with 32:29.20, which she ran in her one previous race at the distance when she took the bronze medal at the 2001 Mediterranean Games.

After a solid two days of heavy rain in Bergen, the sun shone on Norway’s second city, golden rays which were more than matched by the sparkling competition at this the opening meeting of the TDK Golden League 2004.
However, it was their former compatriot Elvan Abeylegesse, who represents Turkey, who was the star of tonight’s show.

That none of the Turkish television channels, including (shamelessly) the state Radio and Television (TRT), bothered to broadcast the race event in which Elvan broke the world record is, on the other hand a reflection of the fact that the new concept of Turkisnhess has not yet been embraced by the society at large.
If it were not Elvan in Bergen but Surreya Ayhan, our other pride in track, born and raised as a "Turk and Muslim", television channels would have certainly raced against each other to air the event live.
