Elvin Bethea, an outstanding prospect from North Carolina AandT, was the Houston Oilers third-round pick in the 1968 AFL/NFL Draft.
In hindsight, and after 16 seasons of outstanding play with the Oilers, it’s safe to say he was more than a “steal,” he was clearly one of the best players selected, and that in a draft that produced three future Hall of Fame players, Larry Csonka, Art Shell, and Ron Yary.
Although sacks were not an official National Football League statistic until 1982, Elvin’s unofficial 105-career quarterback sack total still ranks as the best in Oilers/Tennessee Titans history as are the 16 sacks he recorded in 1973.

Nobody begrudges the selection of Mike Munchak, but it does serve to illustrate how overdue the honor was in coming to Elvin Bethea, a Houston Oiler stalwart for 15 seasons who saw both the awful years of Bill Peterson and the salad days of Bum Phillips.
Although Elvin took a beating, those were arguably the best years of his life, helping Houston to AFC title games in 1978 and 1979.
He might get something of the same feeling next July when Bethea will be introduced by his old college coach and will tell of the many friends and family who stood by him through the lean years and never gave up believing he deserved a bust in Canton.

It's been a time of reflection for Bethea, a time to look back on how far he has come since growing up on the rough streets of Trenton, N.J. He played college ball at North Carolina A&T and was picked in the third round of the 1968 draft by the Oilers as an offensive lineman.
Twenty seasons have passed and his team has moved and changed its name, but Bethea remains among the all-time franchise leaders in several categories, such as regular-season games played (210), most consecutive regular-season games played (135), most sacks in a career (105), most sacks in a season (16), and most career tackles (691).
While it wouldn't be hard to imagine DeLamielleure and Bethea leaping about or dropping to their knees or proclaiming their happiness to the rest of the world, Stram probably just smiled and went about his day.
