Elvira de Hidalgo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elvira de Hidalgo (1898 Valderrobres (Spain), 1980 Milan (Italy)), was Maria Callas' most important voice teacher probably had the greatest influence on Maria's technique and career.
By the time Maria came to study with her at the Athens Conservatoire (during the second world war), de Hidalgo had already had a significant singing career as a coloratura soprano.
It is interesting to note that the life of de Hidalgo encompasses the entire life and career of Callas; at the time of Callas' death, de Hidalgo was still alive and teaching and was interviewed on the subject of Maria.

With a degree of maternal selflessness that has never been recognized, Evangelia Callas sacrificed Maria's love, which meant so much to her, for the achievement of a visionary aspiration; and, despite the enormous cost to both of them, her choice has been triumphantly vindicated by the inexorable determinism of the working of history.
In the musical backwater of pre-war Athens young Maria was lucky enough to benefit from the presence of the veteran Spanish soprano Elvira de Hidalgo (1888-1980).
De Hidalgo, who, like her pupil, had come to Athens through a twist of fate in her private life, was to give her a valuable training in coloratura singing.

She believed she could become the greatest singer in the world, and the author, a historian living in Athens, shows how poverty, the struggle to survive during the WWII German occupation, and a troubled home life with a mother she hated contributed to her tempestuous personality and her ruthless pursuit of her goal.
It was in Athens that she received her first formal vocal training from Maria Trivella and Elvira de Hidalgo (the author is careful to give the former due credit in Callas' education), and sang her first leading roles onstage with the Athens Opera.

De Hidalgo used the training as a way of keeping Callas’ voice supple, never dreaming Callas would actually sing roles such as Lucia, Rosina in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGILIA or Amina in LA SONNAMBULA onstage later, as most bel canto operas at that time were sung by light voices like Lily Pons or Maria Barrientos.

Two other factors contributed to Callas's unique artistry: her ability to make emotionally and dramatically meaningful those vocal embellishments which so many other singers had reduced to the level of mere circus display; and her gift for interpreting characters by musical and theatrical means that were thoroughly integrated.
She realized at the outset that her new pupil could be developed as a dramatic soprano d'agilita, that rare dramatic voice capable of being lyric as well as dramatic, with all the flexibility necessary for mastering the most taxing fioriture.
If it was Hidalgo who first realized that Callas would become the supreme soprano d'agilita, it was Serafine who turned hope into reality by preparing and conducting her as Norma and Elvira.
