Ely was the chief town of the former administrative district of the Isle of Ely, so called because the town originally lay on a low hill, isolated by the surrounding marshland of the Fens before they were drained in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Ely Cathedral was built between 1083 and 1189 on the site of a Benedictine abbey founded by St Etheldreda in the 7th century.
Ely is the centre of a ranching area, and is popular with tourists who visit nearby Ghost towns, the Humboldt National Forest, and Great Basin National Park, which is 64 km/40 mi to the southeast.

Notes: The line between Cambridge and St. Ives was a product of the 1845-47 'Railway Mania' which gripped the nation and saw the huge expansion of the railway network from 1840 onwards.
The Flying Scotsman, the Aberdonian and the Night Capital Express have all used the line and it was also used as a trial line for new railway technology such as concrete sleepers, continuous welded rail, multiple aspect signaling (traffic light style) and for experimental rolling stock during the changeover from steam to diesel.
The first line to close was that between St. Ives and Huntingdon which was closed on 15th June 1959 with the line between St. Ives and March losing its passenger service on 6th March 1967.
