The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music - Elysian Fields   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Personally, I find Elysian Fields a bit too laid-back, detached and disengaged to excite or interest me, and at one point I found her vocals so lethargic I wasn't sure if she'd fallen asleep or I had.
I'd never had the chance to see Elysian Fields perform before, but I really loved Bleed Your Cedar and people had raved about shows they'd seen so I was expecting something special.
Regardless of the skill of the rest of the band it's Jennifer Charles that makes Elysian Fields what it is and this was something that was readily apparent on Monday night.

 Elysian Fields
Shrouded in an aura suitable for a band hailing from the mythical and legendary Greek Islands, The Elysian Fields dwell on the misanthropic and the heroic.
The determination of the band can be judged by their rise from the obscure Greek underground scene, firstly with the obligatory demos, and then with the release of their debut album, 'Adelain,' through the Unisound label in 1995.
Certain restraints placed on the band prevented live appearances, not least of all the avant garde nature of the material and the compulsory military service still implemented in their home country, which meant that despite excellent reviews, the album remained the sole property of the underground.

 Ink 19 :: Elysian Fields
In 1996, Elysian Fields caught the attention of the MCA label, recording the well-crafted EP, Bleed Your Cedar, for the label's Radioactive imprint.
Every single band that I know that was signed in the mid-nineties -- and there were a lot of them, during the label spending sprees that went on then -- they were all having pressure put on them to come up with radio-friendly stuff so they could move product and recoup.
A lot of those bands are evoking a culture or an era which isn't theirs, in a campy or kitschy way.

Elysian Fields debuted with a four-song EP a few months ago that instantly gave notice of an enticing new talent on the rise.
The band centers around the delectable vocals of Jennifer Charles, who sings in a lazy, provocative cadence that's as often stirring and evocative as erotically hypnotic.
The band mixes alternative guitar buzz with blue jazz and disparate elements of folk, rock, Eastern trills and pure American roots in a stew that's heady and exciting.

George Graham Reviews Elysian Fields' "Queen of the Meadow"
Elysian Fields was formed in 1995 as a duo by vocalist and lyricist Jennifer Charles and guitarist Oren Bloedow.
Queen of the Meadow by Elysian Fields is an intriguing album from a group which definitely has the trademarks of the New York alternative scene.
Charles' vocals are also a study in contrasts, with an outwardly romantic whispery delivery, but a kind of rawness born of her upbringing on the punk scene.

Elysian Fields: Queen of the Meadow - PopMatters Music Review
Exploring the darker sides of life with their unsettling beautiful mix of jazz and rock with a classical sensibility, Elysian Fields' music is how popular music of the future could have been envisioned at the turn of the century while remaining eerily modern.
While the subject matters that Elysian Fields takes on are easily cliched, they bring an elegantly fresh perspective to them.
Gorgeously delves into the mysteries of the darkness with grace and intelligence, Elysian Fields masterfully evokes both the present and the past without fully belonging to either.

One of the first tapes (huh?) I owned when I started emerging from my Cure-induced musical cocoon in the mid-90's was this strange dreamy, jazzy, sexy brew of a thing by Elysian Fields, who from then on came to symbolize the sophisticated cosmopolitan world I had no idea 'til then even existed.
In all that time, I'd never seen Elysian Fields live - for whatever reason, over the dozens of chances I may have had it just didn't happen.

Jennifer of Elysian Fields has a voice that is a little more dulcet, and where Chan Marshall draws her musicality from silence and sparse backdrops, Elysian Fields tend toward lush instrumentation, and with success.
Oren, the second part of the Elysian Fields equation, gives an equally enchanting vocal performance on the track “Queen of the Meadow.” I can’t profess to be an authority on this band, as I’ve only heard one of their albums.

Jennifer's voice is hypnotic and carries the feeling that the name "Elysian Fields" suggests: a dreamy isolation of slumber and hedonism.
The best songs, though, strip the music down to just the barest essentials, as on "Black Acres." Cloaked in stark, noir hues, the song is part woeful Italian ballad and part torch song, with Charles' voice playing innocent while her words play the game of temptation.
