Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze (1816-1868) was born in southern Germany and then came to live in America at the age of 15.
To Leutze’s surprise, his canvas won critical acclaim as his painting, "Portrait of a Lady", was displayed in the rooms of the Society for two months.
Leutze never held a formal teaching job (although offered one at the Dusseldorf Art Academy) however, his unique personality and ambition to paint had a great influence on the artistic community in Dusseldorf and also in the United States.

The artist, Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze, was born in Schwaebisch-Gmuend on May 24, 1816, grew up in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and created the painting in 1851, in Duesseldorf where he had gone to study.
Emanuel's portraits attracted attention even as a ten-year-old, and his painting, "Indians Looking at the Setting Sun," enabled him to go abroad and study at the Art Academy in Duesseldorf, where he met the painter Albert Bierstadt, who also was originally from Germany and had grown up in America.
Leutze died suddenly in Washington on July 18, 1868, while at work on "Abolition of Slavery", another painting intended for the Capitol.

Barbara Groseclose, Leutze's biographer, says that he was drawn to history painting as a way to convey large abstract ideas.
Leutze's models, draped from head to foot in American Revolution-era garb and forced to stand motionless for hours on end, could not possibly have imagined that their likenesses would one day grace the "tails" side of a commemorative quarter honoring New Jersey's 1787 statehood.
Leutze, however, very much appreciated the act that allowed statehood to exist in the first place: the American Revolutionary War, and more specifically, the stealthy midnight crossing.

Washington Crossing the Delaware by LEUTZE, Emanuel Gottlieb
This famous event from the American Revolution was painted by German-born Emanuel Leutze, who spent most of his life in the United States.
He painted the first version of this picture (destroyed in World War II) in Düsseldorf, where a school of Romantic painting flourished, and immediately painted a second version - this picture - which was sent to America and exhibited throughout the country.
Nevertheless, the painting captured and has held the affection of succeeding generations of Americans, for the drama of the episode, despite the melodrama, rings true.
