Embarazado - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It has been suggested that this article or section be merged into false friend.
Embarazado (Spanish for pregnant) is a notorious false friend for non-native students of Spanish: attempting to say "I'm embarrassed" by saying estoy embarazado, which means "I'm pregnant" in Spanish.
This may be confusing or baffling when said by a man, and potentially embarrassing.

A person who is embarazado is an English speaker who has embarrassed himself or herself by failing to correctly use a foreign language.
The term comes from the way that an English speaker might try to say that they're embarrassed in Spanish: "Soy embarazado" (which actually means "I am pregnant").
Interestingly, the word embarazo means both "pregnancy" and "embarrassment" in Spanish, although the latter is largely a literary use.

Hundreds of years of separate development have caused words which originally had the same meaning in (usually) Latin to develop different meanings in the two languages.
These meanings can be radically different — see embarazado and grosería.
We call these words false cognates; they are sometimes called "false friends" or falsos amigos.

WordReference Forums - Ordering Breakfast (el desayuno)
And should you ever have to fill out an "order form" in Spanish, look for "la hoja de pedidos" or "el formulario de pedidos", rather than "la forma de órdenes", it doesn't exist except in a drill sargeant's late night thoughts about "his manner of giving orders" during the day.
And don't get "embarazado" ("pregnant") about it if you do look for a "forma de órdenes", that would be truly embarrassing ("vergonzoso": but I think that's changing in Spanish, a man can be "embarazado" nowadays and its accepted as perfectly natural).
Just because some Spanish words sound like English words to you, you can't assume that it is Espanglish or that Spanish has adopted them from English....say, last year.

Common Beginner Mistakes in Spanish - Frequent errors by beginning learners of Spanish
If you were to make some of the common beginner mistakes discussed here, using ano when you mean año for instance, you might feel very embarrassed.
As you might suspect, the apparent meaning of embarazado or embarazada in Spanish is not in any way semantically related to its English cognate.
The expression you are wildly searching for after making an embarrassing mistake is tener vergüenza and it is used in much the same way as the expression tener años.If you do something embarrassing, you might quickly follow up by correctly saying: "¡Yo tengo vergüenza!

So I take a guess at something that I hope shows suitable remorse over my rude outburst, and I announce to the room: “Soy embarazado.”

The Geranium Farm - Barbara Cawthorne Crafton
And now I see: in turn, the grandmother and then the young aunt bend toward the young mother's round belly and kiss it.
The Spanish word for 'pregnant" is "embarazado." In Spanish, you say what you see, for the most part, and so "embarazado" sounds like the English word "embarrassed." I think of that word immediately as I watch the grandmother and the aunt bid farewell to the unseen little one who is joining their family.
I try to imagine one of my relatives kissing my round belly decades ago when I was carrying my babies, and my imagination fails me. Can't picture them doing it or myself permitting it; we all would have died a thousand deaths.
