Embedded programmable microprocessors are in consumer-electronics devices, kitchen appliances, automobiles, networking equipment, and industrial control systems in one form or another -- from 8-bit microcontrollers to 32-bit digital signal processors (DSPs) and 64-bit RISC chips.
Embedded systems are increasingly based on networks of distributed microprocessors that run many off-the-shelf OSes and communicate throug h wired and wireless buses, LANs, and WANs.
An embedded system is one that is preprogrammed to perform a dedicated or narrow range of functions as part of a larger system, usually with minimal end-user or operator intervention.

Embedded processors are generally designed for a specific implementation, such as controlling an automobile's anti-lock brake system.
The embedded processor in the television itself is routinely expected to display graphics on the screen, support complex surround-sound audio schemes, and still bring 150 satellite channels to you with crystal clarity.
Embedded processor development usually requires the creation of an emulator in which the code is run, with output displayed in the development environment or on a logic probe.

Intel targets three processors for embedded market
Industry analysts said the processors' quick transformation to the embedded world is partially an acknowledgement of the importance of the embedded market by chip makers such as Intel, and partially a matter of pragmatism.
Gulliksen said the inherent partitioning in processors such as the Pentium M make them strong candidates for embedded applications because partitioning enables prescribed parts of the processors to be shut down when they are not needed, thus cutting power consumption.
Embedded customers, he said, need evaluation and support boards, OS environments that support the new architecture and advance word on what embedded processor Intel will support and for how long.

 MICROCONTROLLERS AND EMBEDDED PROCESSORS
We might be safe by stating that an embedded processor controls something (for example controlling a device such as a microwave oven, car braking system, or a cruise missile).
Since including large amounts of RAM (megabytes) on a processor is not really practical (due to cost and available silicon real estate) and because many embedded controllers are real powerhouses requiring large amounts of RAM, the RAM is often external to the processor.
Embedded processors and microcontrollers are used extensively in robotics.

 TechOnLine - Embedded Processors 2000
Only a few years ago, embedded processors were a ho-hum mix of a few RISCs, some RISC cores, and a set of aging microcontrollers.
These processors may function as a co-processor or be integrated with a host CPU in an SOC.
Transistor counts for basic processors are now up to 4 to 7 M transistors to accommodate more on-chip caches and RAM, going out to 45 M transistors or more for high-end media processors.

ITworld.com - Transmeta releases embedded Crusoe processors
The Crusoe SE processor regulates not only its clock speed but its power usage, independent of the operating system or application it is running, he said.
This regulation happens 200 times a second, and allows the processor to apply only the amount of power needed to handle the current application, so power is not wasted and heat is reduced, he said.
The new Crusoe SE processors are based on the x86 instruction set, also used by processors from rival chipmakers Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Any applications for embedded systems developed on those processors will therefore run on the Crusoe chip.
