Emberizidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Emberizidae are a large family of passerine birds.
Older sources may place some emberizids in the Fringillidae, and the common names of some emberizids still refer to them as finches.
The following list gives the various groups of the Emberizidae, with all species listed those groups which do not yet have their own separate articles.

To help clarify controversial phylogenetic relationships within the family Emberizidae, we sequenced 1,238 bp of mitochondrial DNA from the cytochrome b gene and a flanking portion of ND5.
Although the longspurs (Calcarius) and the snow buntings (Plectrophenax) have been grouped with the Old World buntings (Emberiza) in traditional classifications, our molecular phylogenies constructed with maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony place these genera basal to a clade in which the Old World buntings and North American sparrows are sister groups.
Thus the radiation of the Emberizidae seems to have occurred at roughly the same time in the Palaearctic and Nearctic.

However, I imagine there are lots of other taxa in the check-list's Emberizidae that are most closely related to members of Thraupidae.
This highlights the uncertainty, draws attention to the problem, and avoids a likely erroneous assignment of the group to Emberizidae (whatever that turns out to be).
It seems equally valid to keep in the Emberizidae, and publish with copious notes as to why this is not satisfactory.

One of the common names for the family Emberizidae is the Buntings, but the Indigo Bunting actually belongs in another family.
The light colored conical bill is your first indication that it belongs to the Emberizidae.
The dark back and head/breast (giving the appearance that it is wearing a hood), light belly, and white outer tail rectrices, indicate that it is a junco.

Warblers, flycatchers, and other lovely species topped the chart while only a few emberizidae graced us with brief calls and even shorter glimpses.
Ironically, our group met other regular Prospect Park birders who had experienced the opposite: plenty of sparrows but no warblers -- too funny.
Remember that juncos, buntings, longspurs and towhees are grouped in the emberizidae family.
