Within the study area, there was substantial niche diversity in the members of the family Embiotocidae among different habitats of similar depths.
The fl surfperch were found in the most protected area of the study and in highest densities at low tide.

Surfperches are found only in the North Pacific, and eighteen of the 20 species occur in North America waters, from Northern Mexico to southern Alaska.
There are eight species of surfperch (Embiotocidae) in British Columbia (BC) waters and some species have been harvested for over 100 years, mainly by recreational anglers.
No reliable quantitative information is available on the recreational or commercial catches in BC but from California to BC the recreational catch is considerably larger than the commercial surfperch fishery.

(a) Upon the recommendation of the director regarding management measures for surfperch of the family Embiotocidae, the commission may adopt regulations to manage the commercial surfperch resource and fisheries consistent with Part 1.7 (commencing with Section 7050), including, but not limited to, adoption of changes to the prohibitions imposed under subdivision (b).
(b) Except as may be authorized under subdivision (a), surfperch of the family Embiotocidae may be taken only between July 16th and April 30th, except shiner surfperch (Cymatogaster aggregata), which may be taken, sold, or purchased at any time.
Surfperch of these three species that have been taken north of the line during the open season and shipped south of the line may be sold or purchased under those regulations that the commission may prescribe.

Several surfperches (Embiotocidae), including the fl surfperch, Embiotoca jacksoni, exhibit a specialized prey handling behavior known as winnowing, in which ingested food and non-nutritive debris are separated within the oropharyngeal cavity.
Prey items are swallowed, and unpalatable material is ejected from the mouth. Winnowing is believed to play an important role in the partitioning of food resources among sympatric embiotocids.

Labroid fishes include a variety of families, such as wrasses (Labridae), odacids (Odacidae), damselfishes (Pomacentridae), parrotfishes (Scaridae), cichlids (Cichlidae), and surfperches (Embiotocidae).
With only 23 species, the small embiotocid family exhibits a remarkably low species diversity compared to the large species diversity of the Cichlidae.
Although species numbers are extremely different between these two families, the degrees of genetic differentiation within each family was found to be very similar.
